Description

Sometimes I worry about my sense of humor. This is an elevator shaft at the Boeing Future of Flight exhibition. The words on the wall, the glass elevator shaft (looking for all the world like it goes straight up and out through the ceiling), the serendipitous arc of light with the "star" flare at the end (which I assure you I did NOT add to the shot!), the metal staircase ... those elements all combined in my mind to make a bit of a visual joke. I don't believe Boeing thinks the future of flight lies in an elevator shaft, but it certainly made me laugh! (Actually, they're pretty excited about the 787 Dreamliner right now.) That elevator takes you up to a viewing terrace where we hung out and enjoyed the scenery for a while. You can see the panoramic view in Bill's gallery here: The Biggest Building In The World (If you click over there, you'll want to zoom on his image ... it's a huge pano.)

Are you sure you haven't seen the original 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' one too many times! If you haven't seen it, they took a flying elevator to the top floor and then kept on going up into the air. Interesting photo.

Its only an elevator shaft as far as you know. And if Boeing keeps having problems with the 787 they may wind up in the elevator business. Very cool shot, I really like the perspective. BTW - Until my friend corrected me I was pronouncing it Pull Ya'll Up.

Maybe Willy Wonka was involved in the design of the facility... To the moon, to the moon! Clive

This is a photographer's delight. It has all those things I know you seek...angles, diagonals, light, reflectivity, shadows, shiny bits, some color mixed in and a reason to smile. The more I look at this image, the more I like it:)

Bill may be just a bit prejudiced but I have to agree this is a fascinating image - so much color, detail and interesting lines. Well done.

I know all about your sense of humor--so this doesn't surprise me at all!! But if it DOES actually launch itself, then Boeing's done some pretty strange things with elevators---great shot no matter what!!

Who knew that an elevator could be so interesting. This is an amazing shot. And thanks for including the link to Bill's wonderful pano.

Maybe it just sucks people up as they pass with a vacuum and they collect in a bagless chamber on the plane. The technology is already there in your hoover! A dramatic POV and a great shot!

There's been quite a bit on the T.V about 'space elevators' over here recently (honestly).Maybe Boeing are throwing their hat in the ring? While a hundred people are snapping planes, you're shooting stars...that's why we love you and your gallery.Never question your vision and certainly not your sense of humor, embrace it and roll with it and we'll all join you on the ride.

That's the new linear magnetic human accelerator they're working on - they didn't tell you about that? It's designed to save money on airfare. You type in your destination, and it launches you out the roof, and you're on your way. Of course you have to read all the disclaimers - they're not responsible for the landing at the other end, nor for your luggage ending up on top of a garage in Cleavland.... Wonderful photography as always - and as you can tell, I'm right on board (pun intended) with your visual gag! Love it!

I think we have some brain cells in common, as I saw this shaft and immediately thought of the ground anchor of a space elevator; A.C. Clarke proposed that particular thingie and it's exactly what it sounds like...an elevator that rides up a cable into orbit. The bottom's anchored to the earth, the top is anchored to a satellite "tethered" in orbit, probably with a solar sail. So there you have it...great minds thinking alike. And to top it off, you've created a marvelous photograph. I'm always amazed at how there's so much stuff in the world around us and how so few artists stop to record or present things like elevator shafts, or stairwells, or satellite dishes or other things that ARE a part of everyday life. And now that I see this, my mind is off spinning in some obscure, interstellar direction. And on that note, I'll just say how cool this shot is, especially in terms of what it evokes.
