Description

There is just something about some of Stonemason's products that makes me want to find a context for them... This is his "One Tree Hill" prop with Vue materials by me. I used Stonemason's original displacement maps and textures - adjusting them for best Vue-ing. Birds are DAZ's Eagle with Red Tail Hawk morph/maps and Noggin's Crows. These items are available at DAZ. The tree has some Wabe's Moss and the background elements feature some Quadspinner rock materials. Clouds are from various of Dick Scherzinger's cloud products... all from Cornucopia3D. The foreground hill has ecosystems with rocks that utilize a custom layered material and grasses that came with Vue. Mid-ground hills use cherry trees and crawling bushes over Quadspinner rock and grass materials. The scene was rendered with Global Radiosity Lighting and Volumetric Sunlight. Render time was about 14 hours, mostly due to the function driven cloud elements and the soft shadows on the sunlight. I saved the final render out as a 16-bit tif file and did some exposure and color tweaking in Photoshop, but that was about it for the postwork. This was a really fun piece to put together and I hope you enjoy looking at it. As always any constructive critique and comments you would care to post are always welcome. If you have any questions you'd actually like answered, please feel free to send a sitemail.

The dead tree wound around the monolith is just fantastic in this great scene. The atmospherics lend it a kind of eerie reality that is jarring making it seem somewhat like a photograph of some mythological place. Nicely done!

i'm not sure what was done with the environment and what was done in post, but this looks almost illustrated to me. something about the colors, especially in the clouds. combined with the striking composition and rural scene, it reminds me of fantasy book covers from the 70's or so. it seems to lack contrast, almost as if there's a film of light grey over it, which adds to the unreality of the colors. i personally wish the colors were clearer, but it might lose some of its painterly feel that way. i love how the hills blend to the clouds.
