Description

An Agaran guy once told me that good and evil don’t fight…they copulate, and we’re the offspring of their union. Agarans have a way with seeing things. I like that, even if they’re just made-up people. I at least like the fact that I’m the one who made them up. I made this picture on the back porch of the apartment Corey shares with his roommate. His roommate was watching some old movie on DVD and Corey was making a few catch-up comments on Renderosity. I was on the back porch, having a cigarette and trying to figure out how I’d look with illumination bleeding through the kitchen window as my only light source. I made dozens of pictures. Two of them came out decently. This is one of them, and for as decently as it came out, I couldn’t resist the urge to tweak it. The tweaking isn’t major, it’s just a bit of fun play with contrast and colors, and a few layers set to different modes. I love the way I went from a guy in a hoodie with a Romanian Pentacostal church in the background, to Darth Chip: Dark Lord of the Sith, all because I was moderately confused and looked at my camera in my typical manner. I remember thinking: hey wait, was that eight seconds or ten seconds? hmm…let meCLICK. I guess it was ten seconds. When I saw the original version of this picture, I thought...hmm...will my look of confusion actually come across as something dark? I’m quite curious to reactions to this photo, especially since what it looks like and what it actually is are two completely different things. I love that aspect of art, as it often leads me to think of what photographic subjects are thinking as they’re looking so incredibly fashion forward, brooding, menacing, or just plain creepy. I often think (because of this and other pictures) if Bela Lugosi in monster makeup was ever thinking: Hmmm…did I empty the coffee pot? One never knows. As always, thank you for viewing, reading and commenting, and I hope you’re all on the verge of a fantastic week.

I am glad to know you to be a fine, upstanding, decent guy...if I met this guy in an alley without a proper introduction...I'd be considering flight as the best alternative for me:-))) As for picture quality and postwork...this rocks! Seems that the small amount of illumination was just what the doctor ordered. Well done.

I love this, really! Makes me want to try it, see what hidden expression shows up. The lighting is great, if I squint with my eyes just barely open your forehead, eyes and nose seem to exist all on their own.

You don't know the power of the darkside..... or so someone in a black cape and mask once said. Your training is complete, Darth Chip. Now take your place at the camera's side, and may the force be with you. Most excellent work - both with the camera, and the postwork!

This is interesting, and something a bit different for you. I like it, though. Very interesting stuff.

What I find really interesting is that the confusion to me has become certainty that is waiting for something. I can see the expression as cold and implacable very much in line with the Darth Chip personality. But I mostly saw it as coolly inscrutable, like a master waiting for his apprentice to screw up, which of course he will do under that stare. My next thoughts were more as a painter. I saw the strong contrast of the brightly lit areas of the skin, and the softer contrast of the cheeks and began to wonder how I would try to capture that on canvas. I was interrupted in this thought by some rather annoying scratching sounds on my door. Rotella wanted in. After I let her in, I looked across at the screen and saw a really dark visage. In its tilted state, only your forehead, nose, eyes, and a little zigzag of the check were visible. The eyes in darkness under strongly arched brows, are menacing and dominated all. That image on a dark night, (or in broad daylight) would send me scurrying in the other direction. All those reactions aside, this is an excellent image! Your ability to capture different light and to tweak it, is a constant marvel. Superb capture, postwork, and narrative. I like the Agaran guy's comment too.

Waiting for something for sure. This is the exact expression I would get if I clicked on a flashlight on my cat's face as he sat on the back porch, looking at a mousehole. He'd look up, a little annoyed, but he knows I'll get tired of poking at him and go away, and he can go back to waiting for the mouse.

Outstanding work my friend. I like the way your face is partially high lighted by the natural light source.

Chip Vader. I like that! You'll want to watch this, my friend ... trust me ... LOL! Death Star Canteen Oh ... feedback on the pic ... ummm ... I don't know if you look confused or not. At first I thought not, but then I thought maybe, and now I don't know. I bet if you took my picture right now, I'd look confused! I'm trying to see you as a stranger, but it isn't working. Sorry ... I'm not much help!

I very much like this shot and the comtemplation-demanding aura it creates, to say nothing of the Agarans! Hah! When I read 'Agarans' I thought, how did something like that ever get by me? I'm thinking the Agarans may have an exciting journey ahead of them since I am sure they had something to do with the ultimate choices made upon the extant photo. By the way, I like your new avatar too!

I knew it! You're a Vulcan....do not try to deny it! I can see the ear.....! Where was I...oh yes, the image. The first thing that came to my mind was of a clairvoyant in darkened room, hands clasped to unseen sitters around the table your face lit only with the reflected glow eminating from the crystal ball placed before you, calling on the spirits to come forth...but that's just me. ^=^ Love it! ^=^

The main highlight growing upward from the nose and flowering to suggest a dangerously huge brain gives this such power. To me the face looks less evil than omniscient, staring straight into the mind of the beholder. As I'm having a senior moment I can't remember which Renaissance artist this reminds me of. I really love this, I've spent a whole mug of coffee looking at it! I like that you left all that dark around it too.

This is my first visit to your gallery but certainly not the last as you are so very diversified in your postings. Your descriptive narrative adds a nice touch not something every one can do including myself.

Now that looks really cool. You really got an excellent portrait out of it. Makes me think of a bronze sculpture. Awesome.

Looks like the intensely interrogating and reading of a face. Darth Vader would be proud. Excellent image.

Darth Chip? Oh, the less flattering achievements that must become associated with this lesser known Sith Lord, 'Mark my words, the ability to destroy a planet is is so... Hey! gimme back my light saber!'. Sorry, I couldn't resist. But what's in a name anyways? Actually, the flame-like appearance of the face is very striking. The gaze as equally intense, such as one would expect from one of the Sith. The deadly serious look of Darth Maul (our first real look at a true Sith Lord) said it all. A burning purpose, blended with intense discipline and skill.

I don't see confusion; I see serious wisdom and don't-mess-with-me-ness, with a healthy dose of "much more than I would appear to be"! I like it very much, excellent work!
