Description

The work that makes new exploration possible is seldom the stuff people think of when they think "Lewis and Clark" or "Doctor Livingston, I presume". Ask the protagonists of those stories, and they'll tell you about hardships, deprivation and misery. Extended times of filth, and squalor. And yet, nearly all of them would say it was worth it. Perhaps that's the most human thing of all, the willingness to endure in order to build something better for our children. To see that the ones who follow us will walk in the light, instead of struggling in the shadows. Here a grubby station, used longer than its designers had in mind, orbits an icy world as groundwork is still being laid to one day make this a place humans can live in comfort. And they endure because they believe... ------------ I was dabbling with the planet, and everything else kind of followed from there. The station was modeled and rendered in Bryce, from components I've put together over the years. The planet was done in Photoshop, as was the star scape, nebula, all compositing and other post working. Thanks for taking a look, and as always comments are certainly encouraged.

Your work is excellent proof that perfect modeling in Bryce is possible, although it is not easy, I know ;)

What an image! You continually push your own envelope, which is a great thing. I love this station. In so many ways, it resembles what you wrote about, and when I see this place, I can imagine those who live (lived) there, dealing with the regular hardships of life...especially the little inconvenient ones like BioReactor #5 going on the blink again and back-flushing into the algae tanks: which of course means that the algae-derived meatloaf tasted like moldy leather with sprinkles of goo. And yeah, in places like that, there'd be smells galore; and of course, my favorite colonial hardship: getting past the fact that all water is recycled...which means that the bubble-flask of water you're drinking today has the same water in it that your cousin over in Green Section drank last week. Ugh. This is really fantastic. I love the station itself and all of the details you've put on it and the icy world below. This is a definite frontier-sort of place, rough around the edges, with dirty fingernails, and quite-possibly, the scent of fuel, sweat, and other stuff in the air. Nice. Really nice. I like this immensely!
