Description

From the first time I saw Odessey's gallery, I knew I had a lot to learn. His creations will certainly keep one humble. In an effort to reverse-engineer, the original goal was to "flat out" copy, his awesome S.S. Hobart creation. I started this model as an exercise to see if such a project could be successfully done in Carrara, at least by myself. Then I started playing around, trying some things, and now I think I'm caught in a never-ending W.I.P. loop. Two days in, this is the current state-of-the-project. Drawing such inspiration from Odessey's work, I thought it fitting that the model bear his name. Thanks, Odessey!

That's some nice modeling work, you're quite right that his work is truly an inspiration. I can understand what you mean about the perpetual WIP-status of a model, too. I've found that can happen very easily, it reminds me of building model trains: you're never done, because the whole point is the building and adding and such. Keep up the good work, and just think how much you're learning as you continue to experiment on this beauty!

That's quite a creation. I find myself wondering what it's all for... what each item does? Nicely done.

I like some of the humorous little touches that this thing has. Great modeling.

@kmoffat The coolest thing about "Steampunk" is the suspension of reality. Obviously a smokestack couldn't function underwater...except to cause a KA-BOOMER. That shutter thing on the nose is to protect the nose dome while underway. Just to be sure I there's a hatch behind it. Most of the rest? Who knows? Mostly the whole thing chunks around the ocean and tries to sink only on command. The flags are accurate. Shading them was surprisingly hard. The little doo-hickey on the rail of the conning tower is a mounted set of binoculars. Silver tubes? You guessed it! Torpedoes. sixteen in front and eight astern. Do subs have many other purposes? Very little else is not from Odessey's original...which still smokes this one. Check out his Gallery (you can get there thru my favorites)and prepare to pick your jaw up off the floor! Most fun I ever had making a model, tho...'cept for all those(hundreds of) rivets.

The old diesel subs used to run on air breathing diesel engines while on the surface to charge the batteries. maybe the steam engine does the same thing and then it's shut down when it submerges. This is a great model. If you take a look at my gallery you'll see I love steam punk and I love submarines. This is a very good start and I look forward to seeing it underway.

Fantastic job on the modeling intro i really like it , your version has a great resemblance to the "Hobart". What a pleasant surprise ! What does capture me on Steam punk is that it is a past that never was but should have been, all on a fictional basis, any thing works ! keep us posted on your WIP. Michael.

Very solid model. Well thought it. Lots of thought went into this model. Always a treat to see your work. Outstanding: makes me want to take a ride on a submarine.
