Description

After posting nearly 200 images of my adopted hometown of Chicago, I thought I'd try something different. I've been watching episodes of Miami Vice on DVD ( the only way to watch TV ), during my convalescence lately, and it has put me in a Florida state of mind. In 1995, my parents retired to the warm and sunny hamlet of Venice, Florida ( on the West Coast, 20 miles south of Sarasota )and have lived there ever since. Laid back is a good way to describe Venice. People walk around in sandals, shorts and tropical shirts. The only way you can tell the local businessmen from the tourists is that the businessmen wear golf shirts and longer pants. People drive around with with at least a half dozen gallon size plastic jugs in their cars to fill up at the numerous free standing fresh water machines about town. This should tell you about the general state of the drinking water in the area. In fact, you can always tell when someone has used tap water in their ice cube trays because part of the way into whatever you're drinking the ice will begin to taste like rotten eggs. Still, it's warm and sunny most of the time, the people are friendly, the scenery is beautiful and the beach is minutes away. This last part is particularly nice in January: especially when YOU live in Chicago. When it's 10º Fahrenheit not counting the windchill , it's very nice to be able to take a 3 hour plane ride to warm sunny Venice and broil on the beach to your heart's content. Anyway, this is my first non Chicago post. It was made in my parents' front yard at dusk on January 20, 2008.

Palm trees look so alien...there are two species of them in this picture as well...that short shaggy one is very, very distinct from the tall one with the afro. I love the sky in this, as well as the shadowy green. It's very sub-tropical and I can virtually feel the concentrated solar radiation sizzling out of the concrete. (Concrete is a natural solar radiation amplifier, which is why Florida remains toasty.) I really love this shot, and yeah...Miami Vict...sartorial proof that pastel came in a bewildering array of colors back in the '80s. This is a great shot.

Wow. That really IS an alien landscape! It looks a lot like Southern California, which is my only experience of this type of climate. They have more palm trees in general than what I'm seeing here, but the vibe is the same. I'd like to see Florida one day, just to make the comparison. This looks pretty calm and laid back! Everyone must be lounging on lawn chairs next to their pools somewhere. Nice!

I remember this - great sky - really nice shot Corey. I think we could use a bout of their sunshine on a day like today :)

Hi Corey, Great view from the front yard. That tall palm in the front is a cabbage palm. The only actual Florida native palm. The two shorter ones are date palms. Disney offered our neighbor $1,500 each for them a few years ago for the park in Orlando. The fringy in back one is a Queen palm. The Queens look so soft and graceful, but on the back of each of those fronds are thorns about three inches long. But I that's all beside the point. I like your sunset. Thanks for sharing it.

There is a lot that looks familiar to me, though I've only been in the panhandle of Florida, when I was a child and we drove through a bit of it from New Jersey to Louisiana. The palm trees, single storied homes, and the lines are very familiar. Beautiful sunset and capture! Excellent light! I like the emptiness of the streets and the stop sign blaring out its command. Great shot!
