Description

This is probably a strange post for Thanksgiving, but then all of these winter holidays run together for me anyway. After tomorrow's big turkey blowout (which I actually enjoy more than Christmas) Christmas is all we're gonna hear about for the next month. I liked this picture from the moment I saw it in playback, on my old Nikon digital camera. It has an eerieness that I find captivating and a little spooky. For some reason, it makes me think about the ultra-creepy, 1962 low-budget psychological horror film Carnival of Souls. I also like how it appears to belong to another era: a time long-past. At the risk of destroying the mystery, the light streaks are Christmas lights strung in somebody's yard along the Chicago River. I made this picture while crossing the Wilson Avenue bridge over the river, as I walked back from a holiday party on Christmas Eve, 2007. I hope that everyone who celebrates Thanksgiving has a great Thanksgiving holiday.

I'm with you ... I love Thanksgiving! I get to hang out with my family and friends, have fabulous food, and there's no obligation to buy anything except a pie or salad or something. Aces! This is a wonderful addition to your Tangerine series. I love the wintery vibe. It's beautiful!

I got to hang with Tara and her family and friends one year, so I know how fun Thanksgiving is up there. My sister and I just finished baking 2 pumpkin pies, one apple pie, a white chocolate cheesecake and a raspberry white chocolate cheesecake. I think I have a sugar high from just being close to all that stuff!! Anyway, I digress (nothing new!!), this does have kind of an eerie look to it, for some reason it reminded of of a different movie, "The Nightmare Before Christmas".

I thought at first that was a car in the water, but on closer inspection it appears to be a car-shaped boat! A ver atmosheric pic, I like it.

I love shots like this, especially when they have the vaguely apocalyptic look that this one has. I know that bridge and that boat...well...a similar boat at least, since it never seems to move and it's been there for years. When I worked at For Eyes, two of the people I worked with lived not far from that spot. I saw that boat then, and that was back in 1997! I'm sure that boat hasn't been docked in exactly the same spot since then...but it's hilarious to see that it hasn't appeared to move. Really nice work here, exquisitely brooding and moody; it would be perfect with musical accompaniment by Wojciech Kilar (the guy who did the music to Bram Stoker's Dracula with Gary Oldman as Vlad Dracul.) This rocks. I like it. Just so you'll know, it kinda reminds me of THIS. Dontcha just love moody Polish music? I certainly do! This shot goes so well with it...which needles to say, makes me all warm and mushy inside.

I saw 'Carnival of Souls' a few years ago. Very strange yet remarkably well made film in spite of its budget and other limitations. This is a beautiful shot, the orange glow is particularly intriguing. A little unreal, like the boat(?) in the river that resembles a compact car. And the house with the glowing eyes. Lots of little odd things like that.

I LOVE this shot Corey! It does remind me of Carnival of Souls - so funny you thought so too. It looks appropriately creepy but actually reminds me of battle scenes from pre-civil war period. The way the sky and surrounding looks so red/orange with the glow of lights intermittent reminds of bonfires burning. Really nice!

I agree, this has a wonderful feel, that reminds me of the classic holiday movies with actors like Gary Cooper or such in them. There's a great mixture of romance and eeriness that seemed to pervade the post-WWII era with it's strange mixture of post-war optimism and cold-war terror. Very nice color-scheme, too!
