Description

I am standing, on the west end, of the south rim, of the Grand Canyon, near Hopi Point. This shot looks down on the Bright Angel fault. The fault crosses the Colorado River and continues up to the north rim. The north side of the fault is called Bright Angel Canyon. If you zoom, you can see the Bright Angel hiking trail, from the lower right, out onto Plateau Point (the flat green mesa in the middle of this photo). The trail hooks to the right and descends to the Colorado River, over a suspension bridge and starts the climb to the north rim (approximately a mile climb). There is a place, to rest overnight, before starting the climb (called Phantom Ranch). The quality of this photo is poor – the park rangers explain that there is a coal fired power plant, near Page Arizona and that the smoke tends to settle in the canyon on calm days. Photo taken spring 1996 and recently scanned. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

My son has done a couple of two week trips down the Colorado and Phantom Ranch is the halfway point. Nice to see kind of where it is.

Interesting photo and narrative! I cannot see any line marking the trail on the north rim, I guess it's just too far. That is the kind of climb that kills people in that climate. I don't think I could possible carry the water I would need to make it up either side starting from the river, ha ha!

Awesomely expansive and mind blowing in this superlative capture, Dana! No way, at my advanced age, would I try to negotiate this area.

Glad to have done the rim to rim hike as a younger man. As many have said, I don't know if I could do it today". :) Especially since I did it in 4 days! The rangers get upset if you try to hike down to the river in a day. Matter of fact they'll tell you adamantly no can do!!!
