Description
Captured 10/24/10, at the 9th Annual Wings Wheels Rotors & Expo, held at the beautiful Joint Forces Training Base (JFTB) in beautiful Los Alamitos, California.
Much better viewed full size.
Just five out of a startingly numerous 42 photos I took of these intrepid musical mavens as they moved around the airbase, entertaining the thousands of visitors. Unfortuately, I found all the music they played unidentifiable. I guess I'm not "with it" any longer.
Oh, did I mention that Los Alamitos High School is Denise's alma mater? This collage should bring a glorious sense of pride and nostalgia to our Renderosity associate from the Great Northwest.
And, I hope that Denise doesn't embarrass me by claiming she never attended the school.
These shots were difficult - followed by extensive postwork - because I had to shoot into a relatively low hanging sun during this particular performance. I got some better ones later after they had gone to other spots on the base. Not to be critical or anything, but I think it would have been more appropriate if they had all worn matching pants and shoes. Oh well, the crowd enjoyed it all.
Toodles, thankx for dropping by, and for any and all complimentary and laudatory comments and favs.
And hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Looks like they are enjoying themselves Harry...I'd love to have heard them play. No worries on not knowing anything they did play, my kids are starting to do that to me with their music, humming along and I have no clue what song they are talking about. lol Hope your doing fantastic!

Well, it is southern California, after all; at least they were wearing shoes, in my heyday that would have been optional! Yes, I did graduate from that high school, long long ago in 1971...it was a fairly new school then, and experimental in its approach to education. I have no idea what it's like today. Nice series of shots, Harry; I wonder if uniforms are not "in style" anymore? You did well with the raging red shirts!

A wonderful collage of these enthusiastic musicians. I love their bright red shirts but they must have been a problem to capture.

You started and ended with saxophones which I love, though like Andrea, the second is my favorite. Those trumpet players really know how to work a shadow, especially the guy in the jeans and the sunglasses! Great reflections in number 4. Excellent shots! Terrific capture of all that red, and wonderful POV.

Awesome shots of these very enthusiastic teenagers. I understand what you mean about not recognizing the music.....I have a hard time too. Still a lot of fun watching them perform.

first, brass band arrangements aren't like a lot of other arrangements, and sometimes even recognizable tunes can become unrecognizable in their hands---you're not alone in your response. Second, I agree on the uniforms, and I'm actually surprised they didn't require uniform pants & shoes because it adds to the sense of unity of a large musical ensemble. (Look at a classical orchestra: Everyone wears the same thing, within each gender. I'm at a loss why they didn't do that, here. Isn't that part of the joy of being in a big ensemble?) But the captures: I must say, you got attitudes in this series that even I never saw before---I'm used to seeing trumpet players bend backwards when they're really reaching for hard notes (you see it in jazz all the time), but I've never seen other brass players do it too: It looks, in #2, like a huge wind came in and blew them backwards. What a great capture! A fine eye, because if you're not a musician, you captured a most unusual moment and I commend you for capturing it. (It's in some other shots as well.) And kudos for the work with the difficult light---I know what it's like, by now, to look at a shot and think there's no way I'm gonna turn this into a presentable shot: You did a fine job with the contrasts, retaining the light without letting it drown the shots, and with the vivid red as well. And you ended with a shot of everyone facing the other direction, and playing woodwinds---a completely different group from those elaphantine brass. All of these band montages have been wonderful...if I stop here for now it's only for time, not because the others weren't as worthy; I tried to get a nice contrast in images this session...but kudos for the whole series, bad lighting conditions and all. And it's really nice that you allowed some of the planes to be seen in the shots, because they add something indescribable to the whole. A real mix of styles in these. More fine work from you Harry. Always a pleasure to return here, and I'll be back for more soon.
