Description

Location: Berlin - Kreuzberg; Oberbaumbruecke Hi friends, This pic here is the addition to the last pic. What you have seen yesterday is part of this bridge here, Berlin`s finest. The blue lights mark the pedestrian`s way from one side to the other.... A short history: Once this was part of the Berlin frontline; Berlin was surrounded by a wall and passengers had to pay a tax. Here, where the river Spree comes into the city, it was closed by night through a wooden tree trunk, the so called "baum". After this the bridge is named "Oberbaum - Bruecke", what translated means "Upper - Tree - Bridge" For hundred year there was a wooden bridge, and in 1893 they decided to build a stone bridge with a street, a viaduct for the elevated subway and below a covered way for pedestrians. The bridge was built by SIEMENS & HALSKE, who constructed the subway for Berlin in these days and all electric trains. The bridge has 2 towers from granite and brickstones and the pedestrian`s way was formed as from medivial times, as you could see yesterday. In the last days of WW II the midst section between the 2 towers was bombed away by a single airplane and repaired with a wooden construction... A bridge goes from point A to point B - seems simple... Not so in Berlin: After WW II A and B were situated in different universes: In 1961 the bridge was closed and divided through the wall. For 3 years it was closed totally, then it became a checkpoint for pedestrians only. The iron curtain here divided both sides - river and eastern side was communistic, the western side was free. Tragedies happened here: 2 or 3 children felt into the river over the years from the sideboard, they died under the eyes of western passengers, western policemen and western firebrigade..... What a shame! After the fall of the wall was this onne place, where the wall was opened very quickly. The Elevated subway reopened its function again. In 1995 the bridge was completely overworked; the middle part was new constructed by famous spanish architect CALATRAVA. The bridge is a highlight of the "Festival of Lights" for some years. Thanks for your interest, friends! I ws very happy about your comments for my last pic; and a special "THANKS" to those who took it as favs. Please feel free to send comments and enjoy! Bye till tomorrow. Pic was taken 15th October 2010; tripod

This is stunning! It's one of the things I enjoy about Berlin. I've never been to Berlin, yet! I plan to work and live there, eventually, but for now, I'll just enjoy it from a distance. I love the sense of history in this one shot! There's old and there's new...there's European-classical stuff in it: heavy, stone buildings, big pieces of architecture, stone, stone, brick, and more heavy stuff and then completely modern lights and a completely modern artistic sentiment. This really works on every level and I love it. The warm brick tones and the cool blue is so well balanced...the coat of arms above the greenish light provides a really nice continuation of the old/new balance that this picture has...and the empty street is nicely haunting. This is gorgeous! Really superb work! I love this!
