Description

Is the volcano entered by the Lidenbrock expedition in Jules Vernes novel “A Journey to the Center of the Earth”. The expedition was prompted by a discovered message written by Icelandic alchemist Arne Saknussemm, who claimed to have discovered a passage to the centre of the Earth via entry into the volcanic caldera of Snæfellsjökull in Iceland. In what Axel (the junior member of the expedition) calls bad Latin, the deciphered message reads: “Descend, bold traveler, into the crater of Snæfellsjökull, which the shadow of Scartaris touches before the end of July, and you will attain the center of the earth; which I have done. Arne Saknussemm” Professor Lidenbrock (the leader of the expedition) departs for Iceland immediately, taking his reluctant nephew (Axel) with him. In late June the expedition reaches the volcano, which has three craters. The three craters are depicted in today’s rendering. The entry point is the central caldera (center, on the horizon, in the rendering). According to Saknussemm's message, the passage to the center of the Earth is through an entrance within the crater that is touched by the shadow of a nearby mountain peak at noon. This condition is duly met and the party descends into the crater. The ensuing adventures are a marvel to read (much better than the movie carried almost entirely by James Mason) and represent Verne at his best. I first read the novel in my late teens. I have explored many caves since then (in a professional capacity) and have never entered one of them without the fond remembrance. Created in Ultra Fractal

Magnificent image Stan. This has such a wonderful etherial feel to it. The look of fog and soft colors all add to the beauty of this image. I found your script fascinating. Thank you once again for this beautiful addition to the gallery. Jim

Fantastic image, that really fits the story. I love the book. And the musical story, made by Rick Wakefield. Corrie

As in a dream, these fleeting appearances and colors, very subtle and yet so big there.

This looks as if you really could get to the center of the earth through one of these craters they are so deep. A wonderful creation and I was fascinated with your story too.
