Description

I seem to remember last year a number of folks posted photos of thier creative workspaces, and it was quite interesting to see how different artists had thier spaces set up. Recently, the Master of Spackoine, renecyberdoc, posted some photos of his setup. I found his photos interesting and inspiring. Dr. Carl commented it would be fun to see some other creative workspaces, so I thought I'd jump on the bandwagon, and give you a glimpse of my little place to escape the chaos and stupidity of the 'real' world. When we bought this house in 2003, my wife said "The basement is your little realm as long as I can have the spare bedroom for my sewing and stuff.." Sounded like a good deal to me, so I'm extremely blessed with a nice roomy place to hang out and do my stuff! On to the tour.... #1 - This is my 'general purpose' computer which has Photoshop 7, Bryce 5.5, PSP 7, ArtRage, Gimp, etc, etc. It also is my e-mail, MS Office, website design apps, and yadda, yadda. You can see my well-worn Wacom Intous 2 tablet, and Epson scanner. This is a home-built machine, from a barebone kit from Tiger Direct. #2 - This is my new HP quad-core machine (I saved up for a loooooooooooong time for this baby..) which I use primarily for Poser 8. I'm keeping it pretty clean as far as what is installed on it. Poser doesn't seem to like having a lot of other junk to wade through, so I'm being careful about what I install on here. #3 - Also a home-built system from a Tiger Direct barebone kit. I use this one primarily for recording music, hence the turntable, mixer, and cassette deck. The black/silver thing above the turntable is a D-Link networked drive enclosure with a 1TB drive. I'll add another 1TB drive if I get some money for Christmas LOL! #4 - A wide view of the computer room. As a side note.... I'm a bit of a scrounger. I'm certainly not opposed to a bit of dumpster-diving now and then. One of my favorite activities, actually! The folding tables were both sitting outside one of those little strip malls, leaning against a dumpster. They came home with me. A little TLC, and they've been happily serving as computer tables for the last few years! The white plastic shelves (with Canada Dry markings) were being disposed of by a local drugstore - I asked if I could have them, and they were happy to let me haul them off. Now you know the REAL reason I drive a minivan! #5 - Another wide view of the NW corner. The table that the monitor, turntable and cassette deck are sitting on is actually a door that I found - you guessed it - leaning against a dumpster. I'm just incurable... #6 - Ya gotta have a little music when being creative! I got the JVC receiver/amp for 40 bucks on eBay! I can't turn it up much over 3 without driving everyone out of the house! And one has to have a microwave (rescued from being thrown away in 2003 by the people we bought the house from - it still works fine.) And a coffee station is a neccessity as well. The high-class Schwepps coffee stand was rescued from the dumpster at the same time as the Canada Dry shelves. #7 - Nothing to do with computers or 3D art, but just another one of my creative outlets. I also enjoy picking up old lamps at garage sales and antique stores, and refurbishing them. This is part of my shop, in the other half of the basement. #8 - The other side of my shop, or more accurately, my mad scientist area where bizaare things are sometimes fabricated. I also design and create a few of my own lamps and lighting fixtures. You may have noticed that there are insulators all over the place. Yes, I scrounge those, too. I probably have more of the bloody things than the power and phone companies combined! Bill and Tara will back me up on that, I'm sure! Hope you've enjoyed my little tour! Now, let's see YOUR creative spaces - that's an official challenge from that nutty RodS guy! LOL! Hope everyone out there in Rendo-Land has a wonderful Holiday Season! Thanks for all your wonderful comments, ratings, faves and friendship! Rendo-ites ROCK!!

Wow Rod, I KNOW Mike is going to be drooling over these pics...I better get a napkin for him, LOL. Living in a place that doesn't HAVE a basement we're pretty envious. You have a really nice set up. I picture you in an office chair with wheels going from computer to computer like a made scientist, LOL!! Hey, nothing wrong with dumpster diving! You can pick up some pretty good stuff that way! Love the green 'bankers' desk lamp you have. I've always liked that style. We just got some for our office at the police department for our new desks...they aren't green, as the ones with the white frosted shades and gun metal gray arms and bases were on sale, but they actually look very nice. However, I can not STAND frosted glass and now everyone at work has a way to get to me by rubbing their nails over the frosted shades....gah!! I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about it, LOL. Thanks for sharing pics of your creative space!!! Plenty of room for the TNA girls too, huh??

~ Wow, Rod, this is really nice! You have an ideal set up there down in your basement! Great captures and thanks for sharing! As far as the challenge goes, well, my workspace is my lap...literally. Me and my little 13 inch MacBook is where it all happens. Not much to see!~

I've got a few nice insulators I've collected as well. And some railroad spikes and joiners and such from my walks on the tracks over the years. I also have a few nice spittoons that grace my living room. LOL I wish my work bench and crafting center were this clean and organized. I tend to be in a frenzy most of my creative time. Great collage.

Oh, my...my workspace is is my bedroom. I am assuming there is something under the pile I work at holding everything up! My workspace is also my dining table...and somewhere behind my monitor is my 20 something year old clock radio for music. If I can get ahold of a camera, I'll try to snag a shot of this disaster I call home.

Oh wow! I wish I had a whole basement. I'm making do with a computer table in a corner of my living area of my apartment. Still it's home. Super, super set up you have! Love the diving for junk.. I also love yard sales and junk shops! I've gotten a few nice floor lamps this way.. one over 20 years ago that's an old hospital lamp. Too cool!

Fun challenge. Great lighting in your eight images. 1TB drive...??? Ok Rod, I went and looked up 1TB = 1024GB. Now, I am smarter than when I ate lunch earlier today:-))) So, my 500GB external drive = 1/2TB. I am more advanced storage-wise than I thought! Thanks to Tara's and my visit with you and Jo back in May, this grand array in your basement really feels homey. And as for 7 and 8, that's where you and I pulled the wine cork with a huge screw and a pair of vice grips...right? That was some combination of mad scientist and bizarre fabrication, wouldn't you agree? Lol! Anyway, you probably have the roomiest setup of any of us. We have two new desks on order to change a one person computer room into a two person computer room with the net result being more usable space than we had before. Will upload a couple of pics once everything is complete in our creative space (early February)!

LOL!!!!!!!!!!! Hahahahahaha! "I'm a bit of a scrounger. I'm certainly not opposed to a bit of dumpster-diving now and then". Sounds like me. I have SOOOOOO much computer stuff collected! REALLY, doors DO make great tables. My brother has done that for his computer table before. NO Rod! You would not want to see my creative space. It is tiny, cramped and messy. Looks like the town dump. I wish I had a nice basement like that! I LOVE your place! Nice roomy and neat. A word of caution on your HP system. Sorry to tell you they are one of the lowest rated PCs out there. They put Western Digital drives in their systems which from my experience are EXTREMELY failure prone. PLEASE, clone your drive ASAP! Clone it to a Seagate. You'll be glad you did I assure you.

This is such a wonderful presentation of your workspace, Rod. You definitely have a well-organized space and that is quite rare. We need some organization tips from you. Just blows me away to see something like this.

I see you are left handed ;-) Very nice and neat. I should keep mine a bit more tidy. Very nice work space you have there.

I could never create in a place that neat and tidy. I have to have a vertical filing system with no file cabinet on my desk to be comfortable, with barely enough room for the monitor, keyboard and mouse. Occasionally I make a noble effort to clean up and recover about 50% of the space but then I cannot find anything and it quickly piles up again. My perk is having windows.

How nice to see your work space again, my friend! I'd love to be there right now, kicking back with a cup of coffee, noodling over technique with you and tossing ideas around. The time we spent at your place was great! I'll vouch for the insulator collection for you. We have one here ... yes, ONE. A single insulator. I think of you every time I see it. We'll make sure to take some "during" shots before the new desks get here. Right now we're side-by-side on a door that's sitting on a file cabinet and a bookshelf. We got lucky ... they're both 26" tall. whew! Believe it or not, the room is already bigger! :) Nothing to compare with yours, though. You've got the best space going!

excellent excellent excellent dr.carls idea brings fruit i see and i wish all of us would participate. a neat place and although my place is neat i am a shitty photographer otherwise i could do better shots. but your showing here gives me the challenge to experiment a bit with the camera and see that i can get better shots from my workspace. as i say i might be "overtalented"with a camera lol. a very fine collection brother,a pleasure to know you. and i see you know what you are doing with the machines giving each one its specific purpose-my line exactly my line.

Nice view into your creative "command center"! I think it would be very individual scenarios we would see from the different artists at Rendo. I don't have that big work space but I prefer to have things I use nearby. Also my desk around my two computers quickly tend to be covered with paper notes, tools etc. and a jungle of connectors and alike on the floor! But most important: My tools (computers and programs) have to work properly! I concentrate on what I Do first of all. A bit "chaotic organization"? I don't know - it works fine to me! ;o) Rhanagaz aka Johnny C.
