Description
Ryoan-ji, the Temple of the Peaceful Dragon, was founded in 1473 by Katsumoto Hosokawa. Within the walls of the beautiful temple is the famous Zen garden of Soami, completed in 1499.
If you can't get to Japan, the Portland Japanese Garden has a wonderful substitute in their sand and stone garden. Such "dry landscape" gardens are known as karesansui. An important Japanese aesthetic principle underlying dry landscape gardens is the idea of isyohaku-no-bi, literally "the beauty of blank space."
I have lots of other images from Portland but I'll save those for another time. It's time to hit the road and head south.
I want to thank everyone who has visited and those who have left comments. It is greatly appreciated.

There IS great beauty in blank spaces. Something I've recently come to appreciate even more than I did before. Beautiful image!

Although I understand the principle, I have to say that these dry gardens are not something I really enjoy. And SUCH hard work!

First of all, let me say: thank you very much for the explanation/translation of this amazing 'Dry landscape' garden, called 'karesansui', very sparse and simple - or so it seems, not so! there is a meaning behind every movement of this garden, I am sure. I have seen them before, similar arrangements but always interesting and fascinating and peaceful to the eyes. Thanks for sharing this Zen moment, Mark Seasons Greetings to you and your family from the OZ crew, BB
