Description

The boys have been demanding too much of my attention recently, so here is a small piece just to add some counterbalance. You may remember Giulia (see "A Lack of Interest"). Perhaps I wasn't entirely sympathetic to her in that picture: she has a hard time of it, which is why she is disinclined to let arrogant men get away with too much. She is twenty-one, an old maid by the standards of her time, and yet she refuses to consider any of the advances made to her, for the simple reason that she considers herself betrothed. Her childhood sweetheart Sabino has been gone for three years, fighting somewhere beyond the borders against the corsairs, because he feels he has to prove himself to her. If she had been asked, she would have preferred him to prove himself by staying at her side and helping her father with the tavern, but men will be men... And so in the meantime she makes do, and tries to hold her head high against the flatteries and whistles and mock sympathy - against the questioning eyes of her friends, who are now married with children of their own. It's true, Sabino promised he would send word, and there has been no sign that he still lives; but Giulia has to have faith. She tells herself that every day - and yet, after three long years of silence and loneliness, even she is beginning to question the wisdom of that... And, thanks to a certain person's persistence, she is beginning to wonder whether perhaps some temporary companionship wouldn't be so bad after all...
