Description
(Reporting this remotely from Seattle. Photos are preliminary from my brother-in-law.)
9:30 this morning Indiana time, my mother spotted smoke over at my brother's place. TA was gone at teh time, so she called one of the hired hands, who was also a volunteer firefighter, was coming off shift and he stopped by to check on things and found the equipment barn fully involved.
It took six local volunteer fire departments most of the rest of the morning to contain the barn and protect the remaining structures before they could finally knock down the flames.
We lost a combine, two trucks, two tractors, some additional towed farm equipment, another small outbuilding and its contents, plus heat damage to the north wall of the farm office, but no livestock or other structures were lost (including their house which was very close by).
No one was hurt either, which was a blessing because there was gas welding tanks, vehicle fuel tanks (both gasoline and diesel), and of course vehicle tires that were cooking off. the firefighters also managed to keep two 250 gallon above ground fuel tanks cooled off until the danger was passed.
A weather station 50 feet from the barn melted onto the post from the heat.
While the loss is significant, maybe a bright spot is we have time to replace the equipment and buildings since it happened in the dead of winter. This would have been far worse if it had happened at the beginning or during crop/harvest season.
Neighbors have already started to show up and help--building temporary livestock fencing in the gaps caused by the fire, for example.
Now the rebuild/restore begins.

Wow, let's thank God for neighbors and firefighters. Just today I was blessed myself when the neighbor Eric used a snowblower to get me out of a stuck driveway. I'm injured and it would have taken an hour otherwise. I hope your brother is able to get a building setup that's even better than the one before!

Man that's a shame that you guys got hit by something like this. It's good that the neighbors are coming round to help out, isn't it amazing how adversity always seems to bring out the best in people? Fascinating series of shots, even if it is of something sad.
