Description

Lake Michigan Sundown, Christmas Eve. * * *
On my way out of town, I shouted, "Stop the car!", ran out, ran over this 'moonscape' on the beach (Chicago), set my camera on some rocks & took several shots of this. Not the most Christmas-y shot in the world, but hey, it's real... Light? 3 city lights in the distance & ultra high exposure. (Thus the grain.) I figure this is what Christmas looked like in 10,000 BC...
Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas! I'll be back Sunday... Peace to all! Mark (Much fuller zoomed)

Mark, this is such a fantastic shot and it's easy to see why you were so inspired as to have them stop the car to get this one. You must have had some idea of what an epic pic it would make and you were right. Can't think of a better way to close out Christmas than with a visit to your gallery and to wish you a Merry Christmas my friend.

I love the tiny little line of lights so far in the distance; gives this shot an almost unearthly look. This could be the approach to earth from otherwordly craft, just landing on our planet. Or, as you said, a primal scene with dinosaurs just out of sight. What a great shot--and yeah, I would've had to jump out and start shooting too!!

One dormant volcano, hills and fog in the valleys, right? Only kidding...thanks for the quick view of the beach on a wintery day... Christmas night here...lots of turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, salad and sorbet in our not too distant past:) Trust you had a happy holiday too!

Craters and volcanos, all on the beach in Chicago. Wow. It's otherworldly, indeed! The relief and the detail is amazing. Well seen, and well shot!

LOL!!! I can see you running to take the shots HAHAHA! And this reault is amazingly beautiful. It really looks like a "Moonscape" A marvellous capture indeed. I am glad the result is so fine, now that you left the warm car to take the shots :-) Hope you are still having a great time :)

Wonderful capture and motif, Mark. This is nearly abstract.. love it... It has the right seasonal feeling and atmosphere. Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Like a shot, taken by an orbiting satellite, of the surface of a cold, lifeless planet, at the edge of a distant solar system. Excellent ambience and POV in this inadvertant Michigan Lake capture, Mark! And, finally, I'd heard of a primal scream, but never a primal sunset.

Interesting shot Mark, very abstract - would not have known what it was if not for your narrative - Happy New Year!

A really unusual capture and I think your title really says it all. The grainy effect just adds to the texture and mystery of this. Well worth stopping the car to capture.

I see this and I want to cue up Lux Aerterna or some other Gyorgy Legetti composition and just sit back and zoom in a way I learned how to do from Stanley Kubrick. This is stunning, otherworldly, and looks a bit like something the Venera space probe sent back just before it went kaput on the surface of Venus...ah, those Soviets really knew how to build a planetary probe...nothing fancy, just a whatchamacallit with a camera on board that takes zillions of pictures really quickly before it crashes. This shot reminds me of that in its raw beauty, it's otherworldly grace, and yeah...I can kinda see a volcanic cone standing proudly in the distance. It's funny, every time I see that shape, I think of a line from the miniseries Wild Palms where Robert Loggia as The Senator is giving a speech and says: "In Japan, they call me Fuji...because I'm white on top." As he said that, he ran his palm over his white hair. I have no idea why that association popped into my head, but there it is.

Michigan Lake? Nah! Definitely the Sea of Tranquility (just to the left of where Apollo 9 landed). Now how did you get your car up there?

No. This is not a lake surface at all. I don't think it's the Sea of Tranquility either. I think it's somewhere on Jupiter's moon, Europa .. ice covered, frozen, simply too far from our sun. But how on earth did you get this shot? Well obviously not on earth, giggles, certainly you didn't drive here. But you must've if you yelled STOP the CAR and jumped out .. amazing. Or .. you've gone and gotten yourself a copy of Terragen and you've building worlds, LOL!

I love this image! When I look at it I see tiny figures trudging across the frozen waste. I have an image like in Peter Jackson's movie of "The Lord of the Rings" where the Fellowship are seen from a great distance, figures walking across the snow. Or perhaps it is further back in the history of Middle Earth and is the Northern Waste of Forodwaith and the figures would be gliding across the ice on bones tied to their feet. This looks like a very otherworldly place, and whatever the inhabitants appearance and mode of locomotion, it doesn't look like a Chicago beach. Excellent find and capture! Beautiful detail and composition. Superb shot!
