Description
Mochi (餅) is a Japanese rice cake made of glutinous rice pounded into paste and molded into shape. In Japan it is traditionally made in a ceremony called mochitsuki. While also eaten year-round, mochi is a traditional food for the Japanese New Year and is commonly sold and eaten during that time.
Mochitsuki:
1.Polished glutinous rice is soaked overnight and cooked.
2.The cooked rice is pounded with wooden mallets(kine) in a traditional mortar (usu).
Two people will alternate the work, one pounding and the other turning and wetting the mochi.
They must keep a steady rhythm or they may accidentally injure one another with the heavy kine.
3.The sticky mass is then formed into various shapes (usually a sphere or cube).

The scene of this picture was seen well in Japan at the end of the year until 30 years ago.

Excellent scene. Can see where the coordination would be very important!

Uh - yes, keeping a steady rhythm looks like an important part of this ceremony. That's a mighty big hammer! Wonderful insight into the culture of Japan. Save some for me! Excellent artwork as always, Fujiko-san! Love both your art and your information!

Mochitsuki - to STRIKE the Mochi? Tsuki is what we say for "punch" in karate - Oitsuki, gyakatuski, etc... so the pounding with the hammer is the "tsuki" part? Gotta love all the customs in the East. You guys have a ritual for EVERYTHING! :) Nice composition in this one.

Very interesting render! My daughter came home from Japan on Dec. 23 for vacation, and she brought lots of Japanese candy for us! It was very good.
MineFujiko
drifterlee-san I am glad that your daughter came home. BTW, I recommend Japanese candy "KOUME-CHAN". It is sour and sweet. It is called the taste of the first love in Japan.:) Please try it!
