Description
This is the rook which is very common in the UK. It is a very social bird and lives in flocks of several tens. It is the same size as its cousin the crow and can be distinguished by its white face.

Another of your great pics, Jeff.

great study of this great specimen. A rookery is a fantastic spectacle, reminds me of my Wiltshire childhood, our village had at least four large rookeries and the sky would be black with them at dusk. There is a great book called crow country by Mark Cocker

Down in the village, right opposite the main road through to the valley and within the churchyard is a rookery! Come Spring, they begin the building and renewing of nests and the cacophony of Rook Opera is deafeningly fantastic! All members of the crow family are wonderful and I always take food up to the Moors for them, as they too find it hard in cold weather to find food. This is pure magic for me. Fabulous! ^=^

Very nice capture with good catch-light in the eye. I can never differentiate crows, rooks, ravens, & jackdaws. They are highly intelligent creatures, that I do know. Do you shoot RAW? There's a slight fringe around this which you can easily remove in Adobe Camera Raw (Lens corrections >> Fix Red/Cyan Fringe). Not a criticism; one of my lenses fringes quite a bit around high contrast edges & I find this a really useful tool.

Splendid photo, Jeff. What a proud bird. Great on this blue background. The pole with the fungus (lichen) is also very beautiful.

OH Yes, we have similar Rooks here. They live in a beautiful ridge near by. There is a big colony and when it windy, they play on the UP winds of the ridge. What a beautiful shot here :)
