Description

Today we were on our way to see the Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2010 exhibition in town, on display from the Natural History Museum (UK) and BBC Wildlife Magazine. On our way we spotted the start of a fire on Signal Hill, being water bombed by two Bell Huey UH-1Hs. As we got to the reservoir where the re-filled their Bambi buckets they flew off, maybe for fuel. By the time we had visited the exhibition and eaten lunch, the sound of the Huey's was evident. The strong South-Easter, which Cape Town is notorious for, had fanned the embers and the fire was raging again. Back to the reservoir. Four helicopters and an aircraft were now in action. The heart of the city is just below this image, in the bowl formed by the smoky Signal Hill and Table Mountain behind me. This time I was able to put my new toy to the test. I still have a lot of learning to do as to where the functions are that I am used to using. It will all come with time and use. So here is the first of many, I am sure! Clive

Great shot of these choppers. Here in Australia, bushfires are always a tragic 'partner in crime' of the hot Xmas period. Each and every year, helicopters do exactly the same as this to try and save lives and property. It is due to start all over again soon. Possibly even today by the look of the weather outside.

That turned out really nice! A zoom-in crop of the center would be a worthy pic to send in to the local paper and various news magazines.

Fantastic journalistic capture! You'll do well with that camera if this is how you're starting out. Good stuff!
