Description

I decided to post an image in dedication of a photographer who passed away recently. He was 91. In my life time there has been Vietman, the genocides in Rwanda and Bosnia, the Iraq war and others that I can't even name. This photo was taken at a peace march that I attended in March 20, 2003. Just a small token to honor a photographer who witnessed so much. I am not making a political statement - just a human one. Taken from the Chicago Tribune- A World War II combat photographer, Philip Drell, died on December 20. Mr. Drell was drafted into the Army in 1942, he had no idea that he would witness history. But his war experiences would change the course of his life. The Skokie resident was a combat motion picture photographer during World War II, chronicling some of the era's most shocking images, from the invasion of Normandy to the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp. You can see some of his work at- http://www.holocaustchronicle.org/DrellShow/

A great and poignant tribute to a person whom we can call one of our own in photography.

This is really super work on every level. As a dedication to one of the more important photographers in any of our lifetimes, it's fitting. Well done, and I love the understated nature of it. Politics, protests, and things like that are always so super-charged, especially in US-American culture, but all-too-often, the human element is left out of the debate. Whether its a war somewhere, or genocide, women's rights, GLBT rights or whatever, our news media tends to focus ONLY on the hot button issue, rather than the fact that all of these issues have an impact on human beings. This picture really underscores that, especially with its focus on human beings. This is well done. I love the overall composition and the sense of an energetic buzz you captured. Great stuff and a fitting dedication.
