Description
Here you can see part of the workshop reflected in the mirror on the Rounding Board. The image in the center shows the Rounding Board hanging from the wall.
Rounding boards are panels that attach at the top of a carousel and form a complete circle, serving the dual purpose of hiding the machinery at the top as well as creating a flashy appearance to attract riders. The panels have to curve or be rounded to follow the circumference of the carousel, thus the name rounding board. Just above this image is a detail from the board.
In a back room I was shown the carousel platform under construction. How will they get it out of the building when finished? They won’t. Once the carousel is completed and assembled the building will be torn down around it.
It can take as long as six months to carve one of the animals and another six months to paint and cure the figure.
Before I left I talked to the woman in the center image sitting behind the zebra. She was working with a thirteen year-old apprentice woodcarver. I remarked that the work they were doing for their community was sure to enhance their chances of getting into heaven. She smiled and said, “Maybe. But we get something out of it to. Classes in woodcarving can cost thousands of dollars and people here get the experience for free.” “And it’s nice to know”, she added, “that something I helped create will be here after I’m gone.”
Amen to that.

Amen!! I second what Lynell said and I add that your pictures are equally as beautiful as the story you tell. I love the category you classified this under "Transportation". It does transport us back to a time when craftsmanship and pride in one's work mattered more than money and glory. This renews my hope in the world. Thank you!
