Description

Every New Year's day anywhere near the ocean, there's always a group of people who do the "Polar Plunge". No exception here in Huntington Beach, where this motley crew took a very quick dip. I noticed NONE of them stayed in very long; in fact half were coming out as the rest were still going in. Me, I just watched from the pier!! (Though my sister and I toyed with the idea of doing own plunge into her pool. We came to our senses quickly!!)

And what is the temperature? They do it here and I think it was about 5 Clesius.

Great shots and collage! I love the movement in this collection. Glad you didn't end up going in - I bet it was COLD!

What fools these mortals be! Cool collection of "better them than me" pics in this collage, Marilyn! But, let's face it, it's not exactly the Arctic Circle down around Huntington Beach, so these bravados weren't exactly experiencing what others go through when they go plunging into the icy waters of more frigid northern climes.

Thats great. Do you know I am such a wimp. Even on the most scorching day I always still wince when I step into the sea without a wetsuit. It's a mental thing I think, and as I get older I get worse. The other day was 32 degrees Celsius and I still, just for a second, considered putting a spring suit on to go for a swim. There were about 20 toddlers near where I was on the beach who went in no worries, so I'm glad I didn't wear one! Anyway I finally got in the water and then a helicopter from the TV news and a police boat came up and told everyone to get out of the water as there was shark. When I watched it on the news it was about 2 feet long! It was apparently sick and emaciated and came in to die. One of the policeman was standing on the beach with his pistol drawn pointing it out to sea!!!!! I could see him physically trembling! I blame you Americans and your Peter 'Here lies the body of Mary Lee; died at the age of a hundred and three. For fifteen years she kept her virginity; not a bad record for this vicinity' Benchley!!!!!!!!!! We get sharks around here all the time but in the last 100 years guess how many attacks we have had.........NONE! Well thats around this beach anyway. but there is only ever like 1 death per year nationwide so they really are pretty darn safe! It's the driving to the beaches drunk and speeding thats the killer!

You think that's bad? I had a roommate in Minneapolis who joined the hardy group taking the plunge into the FROZEN LAKES on New Year's Day. Now THAT'S dedication. Better them than me!

"New Year's Nuts" - EXCELLENT shot and description, beachzz! (In MICHIGAN, where we finally got ABOVE 32/freezing farenheit last week for the first time in a MONTH, the POLAR BEAR clubs plunge into COLD water. THIS is one instance where being 'female' has a DISTINCT advantage, btw! (Refer to the 'nuts' part of your title). WINK.

I looked it up ... the water at HB today was 57F. That's freakin' cold! Three degrees lower than the 60F pool at the spa. No way you'd catch me going in!
