Description

This shot was taken the weekend before The Spindle was dismantled. Corey and I went to gush over and take some final beloved photos. Some history on it from Wikipedia- The Spindle was a sculpture created in 1989 by artist Dustin Shuler. It consisted of a 50 foot spike with eight cars impaled on it. From 1989 until its demolition on May 2, 2008, it was located in the car park of Cermak Plaza shopping center in Berwyn, Illinois. The impaled cars on the spindle, from top to bottom, were: 1967 Volkswagen Beetle, red 1976 BMW New Class, silver License Plate reads "DAVE" 1981 Ford Escort, blue 1974 or 1973 Mercury Capri, green 1978 Ford Mustang, white over blue 1981 Pontiac Grand Prix, maroon or burgundy 1980 or 1979 Ford LTD, light yellow 1981 or 1979 Mercury Grand Marquis, black Thank you as always for your kind comments and hope you are enjoying your week! :)

I've seen a whole lot of cars and alike sculptures but this is realy unique. As you explained: in the end costs of this will overrule everything. Pity. Nice thing is you have shot the original. Thanks.

I'm kinda partial to the Mustang, but the VW Bug is on my favorites' list too...and I'm not even a car guy...go figure! What a shot too. It's too bad they tore this thing down, what's next, tearing down our replica of the Leaning Tower of Pisa to make room for a parking lot? I love the angle on this, and the way those cars all look as if they've seen better days. What a shot! Hmmm...and speaking of shishkabobs, I'm hungry. Great work as always.

This is such a cool capture and a great share. I see that the pigeons liked the Grand Prix best but I would have to pick the Mustang. Dana

The red bug does it for me, too; my first car was a red 61, and I had great times in it. What a great shot--and a shame they took it down.

Thanks for this sharing, Kate! I had never heard about it. And a great piece of art in my opinion. It`s a shame that it was demolished!

Yes, I remember that day well. As I recall it was extremely hot. After first becoming aware of this sculpture watching the movie "Wayne's World" in 1992, I wasn't prepared for how "weathered" the cars would look close up 15 years later. And how massive it would be. I remember feeling melancholy that in all that time, I had never actually visited the thing and it was only a few miles away. I guess I assumed it would always be there since it was famous and people came from all the world to see it. But, there's no accounting for the whims of stupid local politicians. As to the cars themselves, Wikipedia got it mostly right, as it frequently does, but the Pontiac Grand Prix is actually a 1980 model, not an '81. Yes, I know, nobody likes a know-it-all. I love this picture! It's a nice document of a piece of local recent history and a very compelling shot.

I had a VW bug! It took a while to get used to the engine noise coming from behind rather than in front! It is a real shame they removed this. Great mistake, I think. Smashing shot to keep as a memory though. ^=^
