Description

...caught while hiking last spring near the Straight of Juan de Fuca..entry way to Puget Sound. ...what do we have here? ...The Midnight Sun completed construction in April 2003 and entered Alaska service at that time. She is the first Orca Class vessel, a class of vessels built especially for the rigors of the Alaska trade. Bill "Artistry in Metal" thumb_2154722.jpg

As far as I'm concerned it's "no swimming" EVERYWHERE around here, given the water temperatures! Beautiful capture of this monster vessel!

These things are SO huge! When I was in Savannah a couple of years ago, one came floating down the river; I didn't think it would ever end it was so long!!

Nice shot, that's a very lovely ship. She must really be moving, that's an impressive wake she's kicking up!

I watch a TV show each week about huge vessels like this. One week the ship was laying communication cables, and then next week it might be about an icebreaker etc. They really are like floating cities!

Nice photo. Interesting marine architecture. I wonder - container or liquids (like oil, gas, other)? Quite a high freeboard, suggesting liquids. Interesting bow, like it's designed to deal with ice. Interesting with the superstructure neither in the middle, nor in the stern, located right above the engine room. Bow wave and wake suggest high speed. It's one big one. Nice with the haze in the background - fog? Sun haze? Didn't know you did ships, too! :) :-)

Cool capture of the built-for-rugged-business ship, as it plies its trade. About as close to the ironclad Monitor "cheesebox on a raft," of Civil War fame, as you can get with that small superstructure, Bill.

Side doors??? I'd never seen them until you showed me this picture. What a fascinating concept! I wonder if Steph's 40-footer went up on this ship? What an interesting thought. I'm sure she knows ... I'll have to ask her. Great shot! And swimming? Of course not. That's the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and it's freakin' COLD!!!

Great capture, Bill! That's one big vessel, and it appears to be moving right along. If you compare the size of the bow wake with those trailers on the deck, it looks like he's kicking up about a 25-foot wake. He's no slug, that's for sure..
