Description
The battle of Solferino still remains the most famous of all the battles fought near Lake Garda, and the sheer scale of the loss of life still shocks you! Lake Garda battles date from 300 B.C. to the end of the second world war. The area contains a number of memorials to the events surrounding the battles.
At San Martino (now San Martino della Battaglia) there is a circular tower dominating the area, a memorial to Victor Emmanuel II. It is 70 m high and was built in 1893. In the town there is a museum, with uniforms and weapons of the time, and an ossuary chapel. At Solferino there is also a museum, displaying arms and mementos of the time, and an ossuary, containing the bones of thousands of victims. Nearby Castiglione delle Stiviere, where many of the wounded were taken after the battle, is the site of the museum of the International Red Cross, focusing on the events that led to the formation of that organization.
Here you can see the memorial tower across the road, behind the magnificent trees lining the road and the cafeteria on the top of the hill. Lake Garda can be seen in the background of my previous posting.
Thanks for your kind comments.

You always relate the most intriguing histories behind your photos and your photos ARE so rich! This is a perfect example. There is so much in this (and none of it is overwhelming) it's like a feast with many different dishes, many different foods and each of them is distinct. Really marvelous work here, and the color is just what I need on so gray a day as this one! This is fabulous!

300 BC until now you'd think we could figure out how not to fight battles then build the memorials and glorify the whole ugly mess. Guess not it still continues... Beautiful picture and as always I learn new things from your vast knowledge. Thank you.
