Description

A shot I took at the public garden near home. The child seemed so concentrated on her fantastic tricycling along the snows of Anctartica, avoiding icebergs as well as hordes of rogue penguins she didn't even see me. The advent of the bicycle in the 1880's stimulated great controversy about women’s proper role in society. Questions of how they should ride, when they should ride, who they should ride with were considered by commentators. Many critics were certain that bicycle riding threatened women's health, morals, and reputation. Critics argued that women bicyclists favored shorter skirts, thus inviting insults and advances. Moreover, by tilting the bicycle seat, they could beget of foster the habit of masturbation. For advocates like Maria E. Ward, however, the bicycle was an educational factor, creating the desire for progress, broadening the intelligence and intensifying love of home and country. Thank you for your kind comments.

Sandra, this is such a great pic for sure. Even though the winter is often not my favorite time of year it is fun to see how much the kids love it. This photo is a perfect example of how a child has the ability to transport his or her self to another world in their mind that's full of wonder.

Lovely shot and interesting history. The late 19th century was the Victorian age and the moral was indeed very strict and ofcourse more strict for women.

Bicycles and horse riding also encouraged the wearing of pants by women. A wonderful use of selective coloring as if the child really is in her own world. This is a beautiful image.

This is beautiful! I love the lighting, the poetry of the bare branches and the way the little girl seems totally absorbed in her young world and thril of adventure. I also love how you evoked the feeling of childhood in your description. It made me remember pretending to be a car when I was a boy and making the appropriate sounds as I'd run about! This is a great moody image!
