Description
The next leg of my trip would take me from Crater Lake to Eureka, California. I set out driving through the endless forests of Southern Oregon. It is important to keep one thing in mind when traveling through such beautiful country. Towns, gas stations and restrooms are few and far between.
When I was a boy and the family was about to travel anywhere my mother would always ask if anyone had to use the restroom. “Go now”, she would say, “because we’re not stopping.” And so it was that I was once again reminded that mothers are always right. Well into the day’s journey I was seized by the brutal call of nature. I pulled over to the side of the road and set out to find relief.
When I was a college student my circle of friends used a phrase that translated as “Of course, isn’t it obvious?” We would say “Is the Pope Catholic, does a bear s**t in the woods?” It should be noted that traveling through a forest is slow going. The forest floor is buried beneath a six-inch layer of dead leaves, branches and mulch. As I moved away from the road and further into the forest seeking to hide myself from passersby I adopted the attitude of the Pope and said a silent prayer. “I beseech you oh Lord to hear my prayer and help me make it in time to a place of relief.” Climbing over a fallen tree trunk I found a promising location and transformed from Pope to bear. My adventure, however, was not over. As I bent down I realized, to my horror, that the thick covering was unstable. My advice to you is that, if you ever find yourself in a similar situation, find a tree to lean against lest you topple over and wind up with splinters. Needless to say the beauty of the forest was lost on me that day but I did emerge from the experience with a greater appreciation for bears.

Had to come see the bear situation. :) One time we were traveling in Arizona, and the lady I was with kept passing what few exits there were... after awhile, I said Any Tree will be fine. :)

ROFLMAO!!! I KNOW this view point!!! (had to come here to see after reading Faemike's comment on clbsmiley's bear posting) And of course, since it's a somewhat familiar veiwpoint, forest floors being what they are, it HAS to go to faves.

Cool POV and shot.

Very funny narrative! You should have added, "and please God, insure that I have no intimate contact with said place of relief." You have to be specific about such things. Beautiful capture! Wonderful detail!

I imagine standing under these trees, looking up and going round and round, like a whirling dervish - going dizzy - have you heard of: the 5TR's (the 5 Tibetan Rites?) I am practising them and the 'whirling dervish' is one of them, to make a long story short - this reminds me very much of my practise ... BB PS great narrative, Mark.
