Description

The inexperience photographer on the lava field was at the front of the flow waiting for something to happen. You can hear the rocks cracking along the side of the flow and if you look very carefully, you can see that area inflating. Then it happens as you can see. I have always appreciated the beauty of the lava but had not thought that it would make cracking and popping sounds. Reminds me of when I saw my first Alaskan glaciers and did not realize how noisy they are with all their cracking and popping...sounded like rifle shots to me. Before I forget, your picture is amazing on showing the puffiness.
