Description

I was a freshman in secondary school--what we Americans than called Senior High School--I fell madly in love. No. It wasn't with a girl; although there were certainly a few that would have liked to go with but I was too shy to ask. It was with an airplane. A Beech Model 18 to be exact. I lived in Minneapolis, Kansas, the country seat for Ottawa County. It was just a small Kansas town of around 2,400 persons at the time. We even had an airport of sorts, about a mile east of the south edge of town. There were two small hangers of corrugated tin and a grassy field that stretched about a half-mile north to south. The buildings were at the south end. I don't know if there were any aircraft parked inside the hangers, but there was a windsocket of sorts. Parked outside was a Yellow Piper Cub with black trim and a Beech 18. The latter was a shiny all metal plane with simple black markings. Just the leading edge of the wings and the ID markings. I would walk all around that plane and duck under it to study the landing gear or peek into the cowling to drink in the engine details. Then I'd go over to the door or the lowest window to the ground and peer into the interior. The seats were fairly utilitarian and plain. I would never touch the door to see if it was unlocked. I was a good kid and felt that I had no right to trespass in that way. Indeed, I felt guilty for just going up to it and looking it over. I had a lot of daydreams about flying away in that airplane. Never got to, though. Didn't even know who owned it. Think it might have been someone living in Salina, a much larger municipality of 35,000 people about twenty-five miles south of us. Recently, I asked Neil Wilson, who has gifted the CG community with a number of fine aircraft models, if he would give serious thought to making a model of the Beech 18. Neil not only decided to do it, he did it right quick! This model is a sweety and detailed inside and out. (See insets.) Bless his heart, he even gave the plane my moniker. K-JER99. That was very pleasing. At any rate, Neil has promised that it will be available to the rest of you within a few days. However, still some small details to tweak. So, I'm dedicating this posting to Neil. Thanks, Mate! And thank you to those who have visited and encouraged me with your kind comments. Jeremy CREDITS: Vue7 Pro Studio, Poser 6. Stop it you're making me blush......it obviously means a great deal to you and I'm glad you're pleased. This was a real pleasure to do, you mention 'utilitarian and plain' seating, if i'd come across a photo of such I probably wouldn't have bothered with an interior.I did come across a photo however of the plush, leather seats you have so masterfully rendered.I had to do an interior then. You have suggested models in the past that are still on the 'to do' list, for which I'm sorry, this sparked something when you first metioned it, possibly coming so close on your wonderful 'Staggerwing' post. That's probably my curse, I'd like to model everything, but know I can't, so that spark now and again presents a priority model. You have for many years, been a constant viewer / commenter / and friend, for that I am thankful and truly glad I got to this sooner rather than later.I thank you for dedicating this post to me and I must, in return, dedicate this model to you. Thanks Jeremy.

Have you ever taken a journey down memory lane & revisited that old airport? just to see if, against the rarest of all possabilities, that the Beech 18 may still be there?

I bet the Beech is still around somewhere. Nobody in their right mind would scrap such a fine little airplane. Nice job Jeremy and of course Neil. I wish more people would open up more about their creations. regards, Warren.
