Description

This handsome spidery being was sunning his rather large self on part of the wooden bridge which leads into the Scots Pine bit of woodland adjacent to Par beach. Usually abounding here in the later spring month's this one seemed to have decided that a bit of sunbathing was called for. This species hunt for their food, chasing down and overpowering their prey and as with most spiders, the male has to be very careful when he has love on in mind. At risk of becoming the next meal for his intended, he will present her with a dead insect, usually a fly, in the hope that she'll satisfy her hunger by eating that instead of him! The female has a rather kinder attitude to her eggs and carries them around with her until the spiderlings are ready to hatch, whence she builds a silken tent and places them inside affording them a little protection. I have to admit I was not only surprised to find this one, but it really did make my day! Perhaps, as with many wild creatures, he knew that cold was coming and took precautions enabling his survival! I sincerly hope his fellow eight legged wonders followed the same path! Thank you for the comments and such, and thank you for taking the time to look. ^=^

What a super shot! So nice to see our friends emerging into the sun after the cold. It is quite a bit colder here today, but bright and therefore cheerful. No sign of the frog people yet, though.
