Description

Every evenings, a flock of White Ibis head home, to where ever they roust for the night. Many a night they stop in our back yard to gather, drink and rest for a few minutes. The water is a small lake. Tonight, I sat motionless, on the lawn, camera at the ready and they landed all around me, as if I were a tree stump. There were about 80. Since it was dusk, the flash went off and so did they. Not the sharpest photo but I was happy with it. Ibis are about 25 inches (64 cm) long and have a wingspan of 38 inches (91 cm). This group is very social. Zoom for better detail. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Stunning. I have a particular fondness for these birds. I'd grown inordinately interested in the mythology of ancient Egypt, and the Ibis was a sacred bird there; the ibis is representative of the god Thoth--the inventor of writing. Since I'm a writer, I think an ibis-headed humanoid god with paint brushes and papyrus scrolls is quite cool. Maybe it's just a writer thing. Often I wonder what these bird-thing-people have to say about stuff...and what they'd write if they could write it down. I suspect their written language, if they had one, would look a bit like some strange cursive-calligraphy-something-or-other. Anyway, I'm rambling, which is normal. I love this shot, though, and you're quite lucky to have been surrounded by such handsome creatures. I love their beaks...they're so elegant. One of them seems to have spotted you!

Sterling contrast and composition in this capture of the ibis, Dana, the sacred bird of Egypt. Those are some beaks/bills those guys are sporting. Good for poking around the grass.
