Description

There is a fjord in Alaska called College Fjord. All of the glaciers, in that fjord, are named after colleges. I believe that they are named after US Ivy League colleges. The bow you see is the ship, Regent Sea. The dark stripe that comes down the center of the glacier, is dirt and rock that was ground off the area in the center of the glacier. The glaciers move very slow but are being pushed by millions of tons of ice that make up the rest of the glacier that continues up the hill into the massive ice field. The weight and pressure of the glacier causes the ice to be very dense, denser than the ice cubes in your refrigerator, thus the blue color. This glacier is 4.5 miles (7.2 km) long. This photo was taken July 1986 and later scanned. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Great capture Dana. You obviously had some great photo opportunities when in the navy. One slight criticism though, perhaps you could have leveled the water in photoshop!

Great shot showing how our world is shaped. Granted glaciers are the Tortoise in this race, but you can not deny their power! This incline would not be fun, but I love hiking to/on glaciers. Actually spent a summer seeking such hikes, even found one in Great Basin NP in the middle of the desert and as a bonus there's groves of Ancient Bristlecone pines around the glacier.

A lovely capture and great that you were able to get this close to the glacier. Amazing how all the dirt is pushed to the middle.
