Description

I flew from Chicago to Cleveland this morning and was greeted by this sight as we passed the edge of Lake Erie. It is almost difficult to distinguish between the land and lake as the lake is so frozen over. I found it so pretty. The ice accross the lake makes the wildest patterns - similar to what I saw and photographed in Chicago on Friday! Pretty cool stuff for a girl from Africa where ice is something in a tall drink and snow is almost non existant! Had a very busy week and have been to NYC, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Columbus and Chicago this far. Yesterday I had the most amazing day with Chip and Corey and although we didn't walk around much and did very little Ninja stints because of the severe cold, we did talk and laugh a lot and caught up like old friends do! Thanks guys - you rock! Stay well all and one day soon I will be back commenting on all your wonderful work! I just need to get this trip behind me! Stay warm and well! Hugs Carin xx

wow, that's a fascinating shot! I'm really intrigued by the floating ice out in the deeper water, too. Having grown up in Western Michigan, I always loved visiting Lake Michigan during the winter because of the ice pack that builds up along the shoreline. Seeing it from above is a totally different experience than being right on top of it, though. Great photo!

I'm just like you Carin and not used to snow and ice so when I first looked I thought "I didn't realise Lake Erie was so salty" lol. Just goes to show us tropicals are easy to fool lol

Are you sure that's not Siberia...nah, never mind...Siberia is actually warmer than here! How freaky is that?!?!?!?! As for this shot. WOW! I can almost see where the ice starts and the land stops...almost. Sort of. Kind of. A little bit. And I love the colors. The Great Lakes are always so nicely blue from above, and some other color from up close, they're like chameleons only not as cute. Yesterday was amazing fun. I'm still trying to wrap my brain around stuff like hearing hyenas eating bones at night and you actually hearing it. WOW! And then there was that elephant who didn't seem particularly pleased to see anyone...what stories! Even though it was just one COLD day, it was one great day...the stuff real stories are made out of, and just think, one day (soon-ish, I hope) I'll be in South Africa (maybe even with a skinny Russian) and we'll get to be stalked by scorpions in the Namib desert, or hear hyenas inviting themselves to a barbecue, or maybe I'll get to see one of those wild African Dogs...they're so tall and skinny with such BIG ears! WOW! And on top of all of the great stories and images, I had a perfect weekend. Just meeting you in person was so incredibly cool, and it will happen many more times in the future. And then there's this great shot. WOW! I remember stories of Lake Erie, burning, and so it's particularly surreal to see it frozen! This is gorgeous!

Wow, what wonderful patterns where the water sloshed over the ice and froze on top of it over and over...fantastic view!

Wow, it must have been eerie to see Lake Erie from this vantage point, Carin, especially through the eyes of an inhabitant of iceless and snowless South Africa. Enjoy your stay and travels thru the northern portion of the USA.

That is totally amazing to me. I know the Great Lakes freeze, but it's different knowing that picture was TODAY, and there it is! Wow. I mean ... I could look at a picture in National Geographic or something and say, oh well, on that day or that year there was some ice. But seeing it from your camera, taken today, it's somehow different. Don't ask me how. It's a great shot, and I've been enjoying looking at all the details. I promise you won't see any ice while you're here unless you want a few cubes in your whiskey! :P

This is a wonderful aerial capture and the pattern of the ice on the lake is amazing. I never thought it would look like that either, it is so beautiful. Lakes don't freeze over here either. Enjoy the rest of your trip.

You must have flown right over my hometown of Toledo. I sure do miss it! But living in Florida is so much better this time of year!
