Description

Checkerboard Mesa is one of the many landmarks in Zion National Park, Utah, USA. Millions of years of wind and erosion have cut horizontal and vertical lines in this 900 foot (274 meter) sandstone formation. These lines form what has been called a checkerboard pattern. The horizontal lines are said to be caused by the wind while the vertical lines are said to be caused by the freezing and thawing of the hundreds of thousands of winters this landmark has been subjected to.
