Description

This is a Green-backed Heron. Both sides are the same bird. In the right side photo - s/he was looking for bugs on those tuberous roots when there was a loud noise. All of a sudden, on the left photo, s/he had a long neck and was looking all around for danger. In 30 seconds, s/he was back in the original position looking for bugs again. In the 11 years that I have been walking in the Wakodahatchee Wetlands, I have not seen this before. They are about 18 inches (46cm) long and with a wingspan of 26 inches (66cm). Terrific clarity, color and textures in the shots of this handsome waterfowl, Dana. Did it know that you were in the vicinity taking pics of it hunting for grub? And are these long range captures? It's been my experience that egrets, herons, etc., spook real easy and take off when I approach them for a picture.

I AM so jealous; these live around here too, but are incredibly shy and rarely seen, much less photographed in hunting and elongated state! Great captures!
