Description

North of Zion National Park, The Virgin River merges with the Deep Creek, south of that the Kolob Creek joins in and then the Goose Creek merges in. All of that water comes from snow melt, from the mountains and plateaus further north and enters Zion Canyon. They call this area “The Zion Narrows” and the Narrows is a slot canyon, not very wide and 100s of feet high. I entered the Narrows at the Riverwalk trail head on March 7, 1996. This shot was taken at the end of the paved trail. I walked back to my car and locked everything in my car trunk (the only car in the parking lot). I was about to make a bad decision and wade up into the narrows. Most of the route requires hiking in the river under conditions with swift water and slippery rocks, but there are some sandy areas and areas where chunks of rock have fallen down into the river. Some actually called them “rest areas”. The warning sign stated that no hikers were allowed into the Narrows when the river has been flowing more than 125 cfs (cubic feet per second) and to check the weather and be aware of potential flash floods, which makes travel tedious and dangerous. This hike was best done in the summer after snow-melt in the high country has subsided and air and water temperature were warmer. Being an over confident 54 year old – I headed in. I had read that the red, pink and orange colors, in the rock walls, were worth the effort. In about 10 minutes, I had no feeling in my legs, had stepped into a depression and I was up to my arm pits in very cold water. This is when the boy genius decided that I was actually not that bright and headed out. I do have to admit that it was beautiful up in there but changing into dry cloths, in a parking lot, with snow in the adjacent grass, did send me straight back to the lodge and a warm shower. I believe that the mountain in the photo is the Mountain of Mystery. This photo was scanned. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Wonderful. The slot canyon is great. The water seems higher than when I walked it in 'high summer'!

A wonderful capture of these very impressive cliffs even if you did get very wet to get it. Lucky nothing really bad happened and you have the capture for ever.

Beautiful, beautiful, and fantastic POV, DOF, clarity, colors, composition, lighting and remarkable textures in this awesome photograph, Dana, possibly well worth the cold and wet sacrifice you made in capturing it. Of course, that's easy for me to say, sitting here, all nice, warm and dry. I guess the worse that's happened to me when taking pictures is getting caught in the rain, walking around with cold wet feet, and slipping, tripping and falling. Anyway, really great pic!

This is superb work with a marvelous progression from light to colored dark. Super. The details are really well done here too...I love the progression from the mountain in the background, really brightly lit, but more like an introduction to what's below...just a hint of the textures and the natural design that is lower and closer to the viewer. Really superb! I'm glad nothing worse than getting cold and wet occurred as well. Something similar happened to me in about 1996...I was out ON Lake Michigan, showing off the splendors of the lake to a friend from Albania who was suitably impressed...I was on ice with a sinkhole in it, but it was covered with a thin layer of undisturbed snow. Guess where I stepped? I was up to my chest in the depression, but lake-water only came as high as my knees. Thankfully I lived a block away, and so guess who camped out in a hot shower for an hour or two!? Yeah...that's one of the more literally chilling memories, your story evokes...but yeah, the shot is worth it.

I was there during winter also and I did not venture into any creek, but in the main park the creek although was very narrow it was flowing really fast.I seen signs to be aware of possible flooding at any time
