Description


Fibonacci (also known as Leonardo of Pisa c. 1170-1250) discovered a number series, known funnily enough as the Fibonacci sequence that is found in practically every ecosystem on the planet. Although fractals had not been discovered at that time, the Fibonacci sequence nevertheless describes a fractal function. In the Fibonacci sequence of numbers, each number after the first two is the sum of the previous two numbers. Thus the sequence is: 0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55,89,144,233,etc. The most commonly recognized expression of this sequence in nature is in the tiny florets in the center of many flowers. These beautiful spirals can be seen, for example in daisies, which exhibit a pattern of 21 clockwise spirals and 34 counterclockwise. If you divide these two numbers together, you get the Golden Mean, a ratio ubiquitous in nature, architecture, and art. The Fibonacci sequence is found in spider webs, pineapples, pinecones, artichokes, and tens of thousands of other natural systems up to and including everything ranging from quantum theory to galaxy formation. Personally, I find that very intriguing. It is a safe bet that Fibonacci thought it was pretty cool too. Today’s rendering is intended as a sort of archetype of the algorythm. It was made from a Julia/ Ikenaga quaternion in Ultra Fractal.

Awesome image Stan! This is gorgeous. Your description about the Fibonacci sequence is very helpful for understanding much of the natural world. I know i have long tried looking for proof that spider webs actually follow fractal principles, this helps point me in the right direction. Your image here is awesome.
