I am an environmental scientist. A large part of my career has been dedicated to scientific research into the structure of ecosystems and factors that affect them. Quite early on, it became apparent that certain mathematical iterative principles formed geometries that coincided exactly with those found in natural ecosystems. And by ecosystems, I do not mean just plants and animals. The same principles also apply to quantum physics, geology, meteorology and on up to the formation of galaxies. These relationships were championed most publicly by the brilliant mathematician Benoît Mandelbrot, the founder of fractal geometry.
To my mind, the structure of natural ecosystems through application of these iterative processes revealed not only the genius and subtlety of nature but also its incomparable beauty. Â

My goodness Stan. Your explorations in Ultra Fractal take you to places most of us can only dream of. This image is marvelous and your description of Pompeii is very intriguing. When I was in the navy I saw an aweful lot of the world, but this is an area I never got close to. As retirement is looking like about 4 years from now, I am already planning out where I want to take Glenda, She has not travelled much at all so I would love to show her many of the places I loved when travelling years ago. This may have to be added to the list. The sad part is that as each year goes by, the political unrest makes travelling to many of these places more and more dangerous. I served UN tours as part of peacekeeping forces in the Gaza strip, and also in Egypt, Neither of which are areas I am eager to go back and visit with the current state of affairs.

Splendid work, excellent. Back in my younger days I worked in the Geophysical Exploration Industry, we had two manufacturing projects to produce Seismic Activity Monitoring Systems for the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisicia e Vulcanologia (INGV). One for Vesuvius and One for Etna, I was on the Team that did the Installation on the one at Mt. Etna, I doubt they are still in use as Technology in this area has moved forward by leaps and bounds since then. Peace

Simply gorgeous!!! Pompeii seems to be very beautiful, and thanks for a glimpse of what it may be like. The people are very artistic and creative there. Outstanding come back from a horrible disaster. Jim just showed me a web site about this story. It must of taken years for uncovering the city from the ash fall-out. Out of this world how the fallen bodies have also been preserved. Your scientific research is awesome Stan. I really appreciate what you offer on this site with your knowledge and wisdom in the work that you do. P.S. I also admire and appreciate Jim with his knowledge of the world, and his interest of the same. He would have made a great Dr. if given the chance and funding years ago. He is a excellent psyc. nurse and councillor.

You have certainly triggered some amazing memories and hopes here Stan. It's a wonderful and evocative image. I also would really like to have visited Pompeii - all our imaginations have been fired by the painstaking work undertaken here over the years. I cnnot imagine the pain and horror of the time. We are all very aware now how precarious our very existence is. Thankyou.
