Description

"You can always tell you're in a classy joint when you can read the hand dryer in the men's room." --Chip Howell And now for something else completely different. Yesterday, I posted an image and dedication to a friend going through a rough time. Today, I decided on something a bit lighter. Or should I say, a bit brighter as well. This is the well decorated hand dryer in the men's room of the nicely groovy Metropolis Cafe. It's the kind of place where young hippie art students work behind the counter and the mostly boho clientel paint on the tables or tag the hand dryer in the bathroom. A bathroom that contains notes from the management about not flushing excess paper down the commode signed by a "Mr. Stinky Von Toilet." In short, my kind of place. Photographed in the Edgewater area of Chicago on May 24, 2010.

You really do have to zoom to see this puppy in its full, garish, glory. What's even funnier is that it works quite well. Most times. The colors are fantastic and I like the yellowish light. Cool reflections too...I thought: "Self Portrait with Hand Dryer" when I saw this, which is--of course--so common an element of the 21st Century aesthetic. Isn't it amazing how that works? We were expecting colonies on the moon, spaceships zipping between here and Mars, all sorts of futuristic wonders, but never once did we imagine, even in our wildest dreams, that we'd have hand dryers encrusted with so many layers of tags that we're left wondering just how much bigger that hand dryer is. I love that, and I'm curious about the zillions of stories embedded in this. It's a record, you know, of stuff guys like...music they listen to, or some boast of leg-spreading bravado they'd make on a common basis. Fascinating. I really like this.

Something new to me to see so much writing on a hand dryer. Normally one would see lots of writing on walls and doors inside toilets.Like the reflection of yourself on the dryer.

When I was a teen and going to the local drive in movie with my assorted boyfriends, there were all sorts of things in the bathrooms that you don't find much any more. Including hand dryers that blew cold air and never dried anything - but they made plenty of noise and a line of people stood waiting to get their turn at the chilly blast of air. Mostly your hands dried before it was your turn. I know they had a vending machine in the men's room and for 50 cents you could buy a condom or a plastic engagement ring ... or both if that's what it took. :-) This is a wonderful piece of Americana - made particularly interesting by the tags. Great shot.

Guess I'll never get the chance to see this in person--but it's sure cool. Bathroom writing has changed a bit!! Used to be you'd read, "for a good time, call...." and some girl would write the name of her closest enemy!!

I love it that the dryer is tagged all over, and the walls have been left carefully untouched. THAT is class! :) Love the shot. It's good to see you!

Great shot Corey :) I love your narrative and Chip's comment! This is truly my kind of place...Tara's comment about how the dryer is completely covered but the walls aren't touched was spot on- great shot and I really want to there now!

Nice! To me things like this are almost like a form of archeology: there's a fascinating series of layers as people write or draw over the previous tags. I like the colors in this photo!

Gosh! I just love that hand dryer. How extreemely hilarious, that it is so full of graffiti, but not one single spot on the walls. LOL ! And the bonus is the photogtapher is in the shot too. :-) And the most fantastic is, that there are toilet rolls just standing there. What a great confidence to the public, that they dont steal it. Remember once I was tourist on Canary Island. We were in an outdoor restaurant and then I had my needs and went to the ladies room. I discovered there was no toilet paper, so I went out again. Outside was a lady sitting by a table with a roll of toilet paper. I asked for the paper and she Pulled out the paper and asked "How much do you need?". YIKES!!! MAN! IN FRONT OF THE WHOLE RESTAURANT!!!! Need I say, that I suddently didnt feel like going after all?.
