Description

Haven't we all been there from time to time? They say that the path to happiness is to do something that you really enjoy doing, and find a way to make money at it. I realized that the one thing I come back to over and over is making these silly 3D comics. I've been doing it for fun and practice for the last three years or so, and I wonder if the time is right for me to spin off my own website. First, I should ask: if I did this, would anyone out there be willing to follow my postings on my own site? In case anyone mentions free comic hosting sites, well, I would be no better off there than I am here, right? There are some challenges to doing what I do in front of a different audience. I know that the Renderosity community is very understanding of things like this. However, I also know that Poser-generated comics are almost universally hated by "geeks." Plus, for the more casual viewer, I would have to face the whole Uncanny Valley issue. (I'm going to explore this in a future post.) One more thing... Unlike drawings, CG stuff does not age well. 10 years from now people will see Victoria and Michael the way we see the Poser 4 characters today. This all boils down to the fact that I CANNOT DRAW, and no amount of practice will change the fact that my brain cannot process it. If someone's hand is in front of their face, where is their elbow? I have no idea. Another possibility is that I take another stab at writing a book. I started one a couple years ago but something about it wasn't feeling right. If anyone has ever read a "light novel" based on manga, you might understand. I don't know... I COULD take another crack at it... So anyway, that is my dilemma. I want to get some feedback from everybody about my options. Also, if anyone has experience using Poser or DAZ Studio for comics, I would like to hear your experiences!! One more thing: having my own website doesn't mean I would be going away completely. I'm still hoping to get that horse scene made one of these days...

You're going to hate this comment but - FOLLOW your HEART! LOL, because in the end, you have to be happy with the decision you make. I would love to do a comic, have always wanted to do one on my website, a light weight happy thing, well - like what you do. HEY - would you be interested in writing your comics with a bit of a twist, IR - (interracial)? Because I have an audience and they comment quite a bit, I think they would LOVE your comics, however - my site is an interracial reader site... give it some thought. In either case, what you do rocks - so wherever you go, needs to make you feel good within you!

I have a Poser webcomic, however I use one of the free comic sites. I have a really good fan base, that I would never would have acquired on Renderosity. My advice is start out a free comic site, then move over to your own site. Think of it this way. Which gets more attention: selling a comic book on the streets or selling a comic book in a comic book store. Just food for thought.

I agree. Follow your own heart. However, I really hope that you let us know where you are going so that your fans can follow. I enjoy your comics. I'm working on doing a more serious comic (science fiction/science fantasy) and will be running it on my own site, but I'll probably also be running it here too, at least for a while. I'm also working on some 3d graphics tutorials which I'll be putting on the same site; for me doing a tutorial is the best way for me to pound the details of something into my head. :)

follow your heart and the best thing to do is try.... don't say a word before you are trying, because there is no waste of time for exploring the possibility, to much question in your head will stop your path. do you know that you will be success with in your path? why don't you try it now!

As far as uncanny valley goes, that's why I deliberately used a cartoony style in the stuff I did. Or you could go w/ xkcd style stick-figures, or Stickman and Cube (http://www.drunkduck.com/Stickman_and_Cube/); geometric figures; Photo-comics such as Request Comics (http://www.requestcomics.com/), or Irregular Webcomic (http://www.irregularwebcomic.net/), or My Cardboard Life (http://mycardboardlife.com/). You could try to team up w/ an artist. I personally have had a poor record w/ working w/ other people, but ymmv.

I will agree with MKeyes - in the end, you have to make the decision. BUT! do not burn your bridges behind you! I would follow your work to another site, especially if there were updates or ebots sent to me indicating a new strip Great render

Eeek! Help! Oh no, Oh NO, OH NO! Not another of my favorite artists being expelled (???) from Renderosity, or is it abandonning Renderosity??! Ouch! IF you go, will there be some way of getting e-mails to your fans about new postings? Or, will you be posting at both sites? Sad to hear "geeks" don't like comics. That's THEIR problem! (You might be able to make some fun series of images about THAT!). Interesting - the paths Kelly's pointing to BOTH lead away from the viewer (eek!). Seems a bit ominous. (Ever see a T.Rex cry??) However, if you feel another site is right for you, who is this silly old T.Rex to tell you what to do. All I can say is I've thoroughly enjoyed your images, and hope you don't delete your gallery as many who have left Renderosity have done (quite a loss to the rest of us!). :-(
