Description

Another alternative take from my archives... This image is an intermediate step between "The wood elves' domain" and "The wood elf". I always liked this image, but it was too dark to show the elf in her domain, so it got put aside and forgotten. So here it is, in it's original form - another day, another sunset, another long vigil waiting to catch a glimpse of the elves... Craig thumb_2167645.jpg

I like this VERY much! I can see why you hung on to this version. It's got a totally different vibe, but the colors are so rich and beautiful ... it's a winner in my book!

I'm very glad you kept this one. I love it and the mood it projects. The faint sepia light is very appealing and the silhouetted mountains and trees are stunning.

This is a difficult subject. (I'll comment on the Wood Elves Domain in a second, as I wanted to talk about the change.) As in photography, capturing very dark light with detail is a great challenge. Painters didn't do it often, nor photographers. But I've seen you handle dark very sensitively before, and I think you do here. It's dark, but we can see contour, shape & individual branches, leaves, etc, in your mid ground. And the reflections on the dark water give us a lot of bearing. There's a tendency in photography, for example, to highlight those reflections, but you didn't give-in to that tendency, rather allowed them to remain real (ie, subtle & mysterious). The background mountains have a nice misty look; and your sky is filled with rolling clouds & more of that peach-brown hue, which suggests not just dusk, but a pre-night pregnant state. (Dinu Buzzati spoke of the 'genius' of dusk: You express that sense in a number of your pieces including this.) Difficult 'assignment', resonantly made, with darkness hinting at the fullness within...and, as all dusk moments, hinting at the deep mystery of night. More fine work from you, Craig.
