Description
Tne MACV Defense Force, aka the Provisional Defense Force, was the guard duty force charged with defending MACV Headquarters (Saigon) against night attacks. The duty rotated amongst personnel who lived within the MACV Annex barracks complex, or who worked at MACV Headquarters. On a rotating schedule, personnel were required to report for guard duty every other night for about a month. The guard posts included ground-level bunkers and steel watch towers around the Headquarters building.
This device is enamel and chrome plating on etched brass. Insignia of this kind were known as "beer cans", rising from the rumor (and sporadic practice) of making them out of flattened beer cans. It was held in place by two "nail" pins on the back (similar to most US rank insignia fixtures). The actual image of Snoopy, from the beloved "Peanuts" comic strip, is one of many unauthorized versions that abounded during the war.
This badge belongs to one of my dear friends, John, who was in-country and actually wore the badge. He laughingly recalled that he had been trained with the M-14, but issued no weapon at Headquarters. When reporting for guard duty, he was isued the M-16. Later, they were trained with it, as well as the M-60 machine gun (aka "the pig" because it weighed so much) and the M-79 Grenade Launcher (aka the "Blooper").
I want to give all you veterens a heartfelt "Thank You!" for your service, wherever you served, and in whatever capacity. God Bless you all.
