Description
Captain’s log, July 9, 2005...
With word from the Pegasus galaxy that the Atlantis Expedition is facing an eminent attack from an unknown enemy the Daedalus is preparing for an intergalactic rescue mission. As per our orders from Stargate Command, the Enterprise is transferring supplies from our cargo holds to the Daedalus.
“Captain,” Lieutenant Nol’fet started from tactical. “Colonel Caldwell is calling from the Daedalus.”
From the operations station on the bridge’s port side, where I was monitoring the docking of our shuttles, I turned towards my tactical officer. “Put him on screen, Lieutenant.”
By the time I reached the centre of the bridge the commanding officer of the Daedalus was on the main screen. I had met the man only once at a Pentagon briefing following the Anubis crisis a couple years earlier and while a component leader, I found his demeanour a little too severe for my liking.
“What can I do for you, Colonel?” He seemed to be a man that wanted to get straight to the point so I obliged him by dispensing with any pleasantries.
“The medical supplies are all loaded, Captain, but your engineers still haven’t installed the new weapon system yet.”
With a sigh I let out a short breath, and started. “As I told both General O’Neil and yourself, Colonel, quantum torpedoes need a different type of energy distribution network than what is available on the Daedalus.” I moved closer to the view screen to emphasize my point. “Because of the ZPM you have in your engine room we can’t even use the transporters on the Enterprise to move the equipment onto your ship.”
Caldwell looked anxious. “We could really use those torpedoes, Captain.” And with that he signed off.
“That was rude,” commented Nol’fet.
I nodded and moved towards my command chair. “Whether he will admit it or not he’s nervous about taking his ship up against an enemy he knows nothing about.”
The scientists at Area 51 had been trying for years to reverse engineer the systems on the Enterprise and make them compatible with the 303’s and now the 304’s, with little success. They believe it had something to do with the Enterprise’s quantum signature. Coming from a parallel universe we were slightly out of phase. If it weren’t for a “thinking outside the box” idea from my Chief Engineer we wouldn’t even be attempting the current upgrade.
With Caldwell’s mood souring it was time for an update. “Enterprise to Commander Kim,” I said, connecting to the ship’s communications network. “Harry, I need a status report.”
