Events transpired exactly as Maellasia had planned them. The venture company, or mercenary band, or whatever they were, had done precisely as she had wished. They’d exceeded their orders and went after the Codex of Lhaegen’dirik themselves. She’d lost track of them around Maesek Aerthinor. Wherever that upstart militant Illnimaren had taken them, they were now beyond her sight.

This was it. They were about to do what she’d set them to do. She left the temple and gathered her elite inner circle, her sister Cyanida, the Yochlol Aranea, and her toughest three bodyguards. Then she showed them why she was their leader. Outfitted in her specially built Drow adamant plate armor, she stepped within the thurmaturgic circle she’d found and began to activate it. One of Shang’s own devices, it was, unlike the others, not tied to a particular target, but allowed the operator to teleport almost anything, almost anywhere in the world.

Battle ready, it was time for her to take possession of the greatest prize the UnderDark had to offer, the very secrets of her own Goddess, Lolth. It could not be allowed to fall into the hands of Her enemies. But as she saw the Brunnen Daerth emerge from the veil of magic that had shielded them, she sneered. They had changed. They were no longer hidden by the magics that had fooled her eyes and her magical senses. They were themselves again, the nascent whelps who called themselves the Night Raptors. So, this would be even more pleasurable than she’d imagined. She could take the Codex for her own and eliminate a growing threat to the UnderDark all in one swift stroke.

She told the news to her retinue and bade them prepare for battle. Then she spun the last strand of her magical web. It was time to strike.
