Description

My daughter Heather lives and works in Chiba Japan near Tokyo. We got a phone call from her during the quake and she was trapped in a mall there. Luckily she got out safe. I was scared to death. This is a photo of her taken by a friend at her job, which sustained minor damage. She laughed because her can of Coke was still sitting on her the kitchen table. This is what she said, "I was in a department store when everything started falling. A shelf of false eyelashes fell on me. but at least it was light! No-one could walk so we were all crawling to get out of the building. 6 1/2 hours later, and we are still feeling aftershocks. I'll include a few pictures I took with my cell phone. Trains are still not working, so I had to walk 8 miles to get home. The photo of me with the can of coke is in the kitchen of my main school. I had left my open can of coke there that morning, and I hoped it had survived the quake. The shaking we felt in my area was 6 on the japanese scale. that scale only goes to 7. But I could see the smoke from fires in the distance of a collapsed factory. it looked like the atom bomb. There's broken glass and concrete all over. My apartment wasn't bad. nothing was broken, but my toaster oven fell off the top of my microwave and into the sink."

When I saw the photo I thought she must be somewhere in Japan, from the looks of things leaning and on the floor. Then I read your comment. I'm very happy for you and your daughter. And my heart goes out to those who don't know, or know they've lost loved ones, homes and work places. This is worse than a war - there is no selectiveness in the destruction. I pray the nuclear power plant will hold, or the radiation catastrophe will be worse than the Hiroshima bomb. Japan doesn't need a second nuclear catastrophe, and that in addition to the present catastrophe.

Reminds me of a story my parents told me they had a major quake where they were (California) and had lots of damage and one thing that fell over was the stereo so as my dad was trying to get things back in order he stood it all back up and then turn on the radio to check it and my mom listens to country music and he said he swears when he turned it on the song called "Ain't nothing wrong with the radio" came on and they laughed and cried when they heard it. I glad to see she is well, and she ia so beautiful great to see her smiling.. and glad that coke survived too WHEW lol

So glad to hear she is safe and I think for most women, being trapped in a mall would be a dream come true. As for us guys, it would be a Lowe's or Home Depot !

Great news, though an experience hopefully not to be repeated! Terribly sad for all those lives that have been lost. My brother lives in New Zealand which is another area of instability but thankfully he lives in Wellington but as he works with marine radio he will have been very busy because of this apalling disaster working with shipping in the pacific. Thankyou for posting, Sherrie, good luck to you and your daughter.

Oh, I'm SOOOO glad that your daughter is safe!! I'm sure things may be a bit hard with no transportation, possibly no electricity, but she is alive! My heart goes out to the people of Japan for this horrid calamity and my prayers go out to those who have lost loved ones and also everything they own.
