Description

(Old image - October 2008-March 2009) I would like to update my gallery here with a fuller set of my images, so I will be uploading some old images here in the near future, as well as the new ones. This is a very old image. It's a derivative of one of my first images in Carrara: "Artistic Tribute" thumb_1695070.jpg I was playing with the scene and changed the skin tone of the model. What struck me then was how much the meaning of the image had changed for me with such a small alteration. As always, I'd be glad to hear your comments and opinions. 2011: updated based on some very useful criticism -- thank you!

I must say the older Image looks better to me. The new one, there is something not right with the eyes and also the skin is very very shiny.

You're right, changing the skin color gives the pic a whole different feel. I like it. I like the old one (with/without the fixed eyes) too! The blue wrap really stands out with this one. I agree about the eyes. It looks like the pupils are indented. The skin looks fine to me being shiny. It just may need some more tones on the nose. It may also need some reflected light along the jaw like you have in the original. The more I look at this, the more I like it. Really nice job. You've given me some ideas. It's amazing what happens when we experiment.

There are some technical issues that need to be massaged. I agree the eyes are casting unrealistic reflections, possibly too reflective. Also, try adding more yellow tones around the outer edges of the pupils. I think the perfection of white in the eyes is also contributing to it's ineffectiveness. You're also getting some banding in the blue head scarf. You have yo watch for details like that, the human eye is intelligent. I don't agree that the skin tone in the new render is too "shinny". Darker skin can produce shinny skin, therefore I think it's pretty authentic. Also, different people perspire differently, everyone does not have supple, smooth-airbrushed skin. :) In fact, 90% of the world's population does not. I prefer the new image over the old one. I think the new image better shows the hardships of some people's realities, and in the human condition in general. To my senses, the story or message is more emotive and moving. The pose challenges the viewer to face these realities in a very intimate way. Nicely positioned and nicely done.

A creative derivation of this classic image - the skin looks great but I think an added reflection in the eyes would be the finishing touch.

Maybe the best image I have seen since a long time. I am an absolute fan of Vermeer!
