Description
The Nellie C was launched on June 6th 1910 into Humboldt Bay as a passenger ferry boat. She carried mill workers and longshoremen employed by the timber companies on the Samoa Peninsula. She was sold to new owners in 1931 and renamed the Madaket.
The ferry service ended with the completion of the Samoa bridge in 1971. The Madaket and her sister ships faced an uncertain future but she would be spared from the scrap yard. In 1972 she began her new life as the Humboldt Bay Harbor Cruise Boat.
Thanks to donations from the local community, during the summer of 1989 she underwent a complete restoration. The Madaket is the last remaining vessel of the fleet that once transported workers around Humboldt Bay. Today she continues to be the oldest passenger carrying vessel in continuous service in the United States.

It's good to see, restorations in general, I am all for it ... and what a great job they did - good enough for many more decades to come and to enjoy - day-tripping around the harbour ! But what an unusual name 'Madaket' (maybe many owners initials put together?) BB

Such a engagement I wanted more. A living reminder of days gone by. I would derive the name of "Marine" or "Madagascar"? Google could not find anything exact. But this ship is mentioned. Thanks for the story. Something learned. Juli
