Description

Most of the land between Humboldt Bay and the forested hillsides was at one time marshland with a few drier prairie areas. The Arcata Prairie was the site of several Wiyot villages and was called Goal-la-nah meaning a land a little above water. In 1850 white settlers laid out the town of Union on the shore of the bay. The name was changed to Arcata on March 20, 1860. In 1850 swampland reclamation was legalized and encouraged by the federal government. Sixty-five hundred acres of marshland existed on Humboldt Bay in the 1800’s. Now there is less than one tenth of that. The Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary was dedicated July 4, 1981 to preserve what was left. By the way, this is not a meadow. There is water under those plants.

So glad they saved a remnant! A shame we desecrate our land so easily.

Lovely shot through the bushes to the reeds and water plants. It looks so unspoiled now. One tiny corner left unscathed. Thanks for the history.

Nice to see that they've managed to save some of it. Love the tranquility of this shot as well as the lighting and depth. Very nice work here.
