Description

IN THE MIDST of the Great Depression, America's railroads turned to fast trains to draw the public back to rail travel. In the Midwest, the Chicago & North Western was preparing to launch high-speed service between Chicago and Minneapolis. The Milwaukee Road's response was to create a fast, reliable, and stylish express train. The name Hiawatha, a character from the epic Henry Wadsworth Longfellow poem, was selected. Hiawatha, as some of you may recall from grade school, was "fleet of foot." The Milwaukee Road train was even "fleeter." The Milwaukee Road turned for help to the American Locomotive Co., which reviewed the project and guaranteed design, manufacture, and delivery on the railroad's tight schedule.Alco delivered locomotives nos. 1 and 2 in 1935, 3 in 1936, and 4 in 1937. The railroad's Milwaukee shops produced 50 matching passenger cars. Once the locomotives were delivered, they were tested on freight trains, and a 136-mile trial run was made on May 15, 1935. The streamliner made its debut two weeks later, running from Chicago to the Twin Cities beginning May 29, 1935. The Hiawatha was a smash hit, hauling 1 million people in 40 months and spawning larger steamers (and later diesels) to haul a series of distinctive orange and crimson passenger cars.

I like this... instantly I questioned why more trains front end isn't designed differently - ya know... the train should be designed to get under whatever is in it's path and trow it to the side - I think original trains had this Idea in mind, but as time went on, they didn't think about Cars, Trucks, 18 Wheelers...

Très impressionnant, mais je n'aurais jamais imaginé que c'était une 221, comme dans les jouets Hornby (la Jep était une 222) des années 40-50. Je pensais que ça devait être une 231 ou une 232…
