Description

Here is a view of the mechanics. As you open the door to a new apartment, nothing is done, just bare brick walls, a concrete sub-sub-floor. Essentially a cave with a floor plan. In order to get things to poke out of the walls, like pipes and electrical sockets, the workers will use saws or even a router to gouge out a channel. Wires are usually no more than 16 gage, laid inside thin walled PVC. When they reach the wall, they will use wire ties to bring the pair of same colored insulated wires into a bundle. There is no Romex, plastic sheething style wire here. Often the electricians will get the wires backward and no one can figure out why, when the lights are turned on, the television makes funny noises, or blows out! The electrical is 250 Volts AC at 50 Hz. As you walk in, there is a four to six inch drop from the exterior finished floor, or the door stoop. in this space the plumbing and electrical are run, then covered in very low quality thin red bricks. Afterward, concrete is poured over the top and a finished floor, such as tile is applied.

I bet the pvc is as bad as it use to be here or worse.once the concrete is poured they must have a hell of a problem to find issues. I did have my electrical license before but I would not touch the wiring in Manila

Interesting series. I can see what you mean about the buildings looking more western, but I can see subtle influences from their own esthetic traditions. I certainly hope they don't lose too much of their own culture as they continue to open more and more to the west. I've really enjoyed your series on the construction of these buildings.
